Without international support, Lebanon may go under

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was perceived as an opportunity for progress in the immediate and mid-term future. It opened the way for Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government to demonstrate its capacity to take the steps needed to regain sovereignty over South Lebanon, consolidate national security and achieve economic recovery and repair of all the damages caused by the war. The government quickly implemented the security provisions of Resolution 1701 south of the Litani River and along the Syrian border, opening the way for an expanded deployment of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, in the South. When Hizbullah conceded the area for this deployment, many observers believed that Lebanon's domestic problems were on the way to being resolved.Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's declaration of a "divine victory" was the first indication of the collapse of the consensus among the Lebanese parties to accept Resolution 1701 and the deployment of the army in the South.

Achieving final, peaceful settlement of Palestinian question key ...

With speaker after speaker in the General Assembly urging the Israeli and Palestinian leadership to resume long-stalled peace talks and to shore up -- and even extend -- a fragile truce, as the ceasefire between the two sides moved into its fifth day, the world body, today, wrapped up a two-day debate which underscored, above all, that achieving a final and peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine was the key to stability in the Middle East.

Concluding the annual debate that traditionally opens its consideration of the question of Palestine and the situation in the wide Middle East -– delegations will reconvene tomorrow to take action on six relevant draft resolutions –- the Assembly heard calls ring out for sustained international involvement to support both the Palestinian and Israeli sides in revitalizing peace efforts, and to use the momentum generated by last Sunday's truce to "breathe new life" into faltering negotiations on the other tracks of the Arab-Israeli conflict, including regarding the Syrian Golan and Lebanon.

MediaWise Releases 11th Annual Video Game Report Card

MediaWise recently released its 11th annual video game report card, pinpointing the holiday's safe bets for parents looking to keep violent games out of the hands of younger children and reviewing how effective the industry is in keeping inappropriate materials out of the youngsters' hands.

The report acknowledges the strides taken by the industry, specifically noting the progress major retailers have maintained in restricting the sales of M-rated games to those younger than 17. Specialty stores, however, received a big, fat F grade, as the report notes that half of all minors as part of a survey successfully purchased an M-rated game at various specialty locations.

Ratings education and retailer policies came away with B ratings this year while big retail enforcement and console manufacturers struck gold with A ratings.
