Emerging From The Darkness

It was a post-Christmas dinner in January 1980 when Platt Arnold, a 1964 graduate of Connecticut College, was sitting around the table with a few friends talking about The Revels, a group founded in Boston that promoted folk music, dance and rituals.

Revels are held every year in major cities and are a sort of celebration of the winter solstice. Arnold's husband David had performed in the New York Revels in 1979. "We had fun talking about it that night,'' she says. "We were reminiscing about what an incredible show it had been.''

Also at the table were Anita and Gene TeHennipe, and David Robb, who at the time was chaplain at Connecticut College. By July, the group had decided to organize their own version of a revel. They found performers, costumes and singers. They sold ads, printed a program, did the publicity and opened at Harkness Chapel at Conn College.

Mrs Bingley says her husband was "wonderful father"

The wife of the Blackhawk helicopter pilot killed in Wednesday's crash on the HMAS Kanimbla has released a statement praising her husband as a wonderful partner and father.

Melissa Bingley faced a press conference today to talk about her husband.

But Mrs Bingley says she will not give interviews in the future, and would like the media to respect her privacy.

The statement reads:

"Mark is a wonderful man, a wonderful father; even if it was for a short period of time. Mark is an amazing pilot who wanted to fly from the moment he was born – everything he did was aimed at becoming a pilot. When he did a course, he didn’t just meet the requirements, he excelled. He loved the military and the opportunities it opened up to him. He moved from infantry to aviation and loved the chance to live and fly in the United States as well as the operations he has participated in around the world.

Realistic war strategy worthy of a medal

Veterans of World War II video games might be tempted to write off Company of Heroes as just another retread in a genre already saturated with Battlefield: 1942, Call of Duty 2 and Medal of Honor. But listen up, private: These arent your daddys toy soldiers. The real-time strategy game begins as the Allied forces storm Omaha Beach on D-Day. From there, its up to you to guide the soldiers of Able Company through several well-defined missions as they slug it out against the Nazis across France. As players capture territory and strategic locations, the ability to deploy personnel and armored vehicles is increased, as is the ability to build support and defense fortifications. Troops and armor come in many stripes, each with its own strengths and special abilities. Riflemen, mortar squads, howitzers, snipers, halftracks, bazooka-toting rangers and Sherman tanks are just some of the weapons in the arsenal, and most are upgradable.

An odyssey in education remembered

For many years, I have told all who would listen that I attended 13 schools in my abbreviated journey through formal education. The mystery why I thought that was some sort of distinction, but any time there was a lull in the conversation, out would pop, "I went to 13 schools, you know." Most of the time listeners were kind enough not to roll their eyes until I left the room.

What I never expected was to be called on it. That's what comes of talking to college and high school age young people. They are likely to tell you to put up or shut up.

That's what happened earlier this month. Nina and I visited a high school and on the walk back to our car, a student asked me politely if I had gone to school in Cincinnati. "Oh, yes, several of them." Then I pulled out my trusty blockbuster.
