LucasArts developing Fracture for PS3 and Xbox 360

LucasArts and Day 1 Studios have announced that they are together developing Fracture for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

The game would be launched in Summer next year. The game would be a futuristic action shooter and would feature cybernetic enhanced soldiers at war.

Peter Hirschmann, vice president of product development at LucasArts spoke about this game: "LucasArts sees simulation-based gameplay as an essential component of a true next-gen experience, and that's exactly what Fracture delivers. Day 1 Studios has done a phenomenal job of creating true next-gen tech that not only dazzles on a visual level but also serves as a core gameplay mechanic. Unlike many other next-gen games on the market, Fracture simply isn't possible in the previous generation of consoles."

Denny Thorley, president of Day 1 added: "LucasArts' excitement for Fracture is palpable, and it only inspires us even further to ensure the game lives up to its lofty expectations."LucasArts' excitement for Fracture is palpable, and it only inspires us even further to ensure the game lives up to its lofty expectations

The two companies have already developed and delivered two successful games Mercenaries in 2005 and Thrillville in 2006.

Mercenaries mooted for handhelds

With Pandemic presently creating Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for the PC, PS2, Xbox 360 and PS3, to be published by EA, designer Scott Warner has let slip during an interview that he would very much like to see the war simulation series tackle handheld platforms in the future.

Speaking to UK games website Eurogamer.net, he hinted that Pandemic might look more closely at possibilities once the game is completed for consoles and the PC. "At the moment we're only concentrating on the versions of the game we've announced, but I'd love for us to work on a handheld version of Mercs!" the lead designer enthused.

He added that anything is possible, once the title is released this winter. Mercenaries 2 is looking better than ever, its accuracy levels perhaps proving a little too close to the bone for some - with officials from Venezuela (the game's setting) decrying the title as little more than American propaganda.

01:13 New game 'Fracture' announced (0)

LucusArts are known mostly for their work on Star Wars themed games, so this new announcement may come as shock to you when you learn that they are working on something that is not Star Wars. Named Fracture, LucusArts have teamed up with Day 1 Studios to bring an intriguing-sounding game onto people's radar.

The game will throw you into the 22nd Century, in the year 2161. The game sounds like it is going to do what Red Faction did way back on the PS2, whereby you could blow up the scenery and use it to your advantage for finding a different path to the end. However, since this is the new-generation of hardware, Fracture will do it on a much grander scale, with a much grander engine to do it with.

'Terrain Deformation' is the technology behind the game that allows such exciting things as the following to happen:

When Briggs throws a tectonic grenade on a level battlefield, the ground blasts upward to provide access to an otherwise unreachable area.

Gamers Shoot It Out in LucasArts' Fractured Future World

In the new shooter game "Fracture," melting of the polar ice caps has caused the Mississippi River to flood, wiping out the middle of the United States, leaving two battling groups. LucasArts and Day 1 Studios plan to release "Fracture" -- set in the year 2161 -- in the summer of 2008.
