Midway Posts 19.8 Million Quarterly Loss - Posted by Kyle on ...

Chicago's premier publisher, Midway Games, today announced that the company saw a decline in net losses from 2006 to 2007. "The 2007 first quarter net loss was $19.8 million...compared with a 2006 first quarter net loss of $22.6 million," their press release reads. The company posted net revenues of $11.1 million for the 2007 first quarter, compared to 2006 first quarter net revenues of $15.4 million and ahead of prior guidance of approximately $7 million. The PlayStation 2 accounted for 35.8% of net revenue in the quarter, compared to 15.1% for Nintendo Wii, 12.1% for Nintendo DS and 7.2% for Xbox 360.

David Zucker, president and chief executive officer of Midway concluded, "We are very excited by the strong response of gamers and the press alike to the launch of The Lord of the Rings Online, and we are encouraged by the early excitement we are seeing for such front-line titles as Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii, Stranglehold, BlackSite: Area 51, The Wheelman, Unreal Tournament III and Hour of Victory.

15:11 Mortal Kombat Wii lacks online play (0)

Both the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox versions of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon featured online play, allowing gamers to battle it out against one another over the Internet. However, Midway has announced that the Wii version will not - and they blame Nintendo.

"Obviously we had online on other platforms so it wasn't going to be a technology challenge for us," said the game's producer, Shaun Himmerick, to advancedmn.com. "Nintendo didn't have their online system ready for us when we would have needed to implement it," he continued.

MCP: GAMING NEWS ROUNDUP - 05.15.07

Let me introduce you to a game that missed yesterday's list of new releases: Aegis Wing. It's a shoot-em-up that was conceived by three Microsoft interns, and will be available as a free (that's "free," with two Es) download tomorrow for Gold and Silver Xbox Live subscribers. That means everyone. It's anybody's guess what the relationship between the conception and the execution of the game might be, but this falls into both Microsoft's community-minded goals, and their recruitment drive. Join the Microsoft, See the Navy! What really matters is that this is a side-scroller with co-op play, via Live or on the same console. Hurrah!Damn it, Nintendo. Online multiplayer is kinda spiffy; why do you hate it so much? Third-party developers just aren't getting the support from Big N that they need to implement online components for their Wii releases.

01:51 LEGO Star Wars goes next-gen (0)

There is a place in this world for games designed for children, which somehow work out to be just as entertaining for adult gamers alike. The LEGO Star Wars games have been testament to this and now, the wonderful brick destroying game will be making a next-generation appearance for the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars in LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

The partnership between developer Traveller's Tales and LucasArts continues in this next LEGO Star Wars feature. Previous titles in the series, LEGO Star Wars and Star Wars II covered the new films and the Original Trilogy, but this new title will encompass the entire Star Wars saga from beginning to end.

From the Trade Federation's “negotiations" with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace to the space battle above Endor in Return of the Jedi, The Complete Saga allows players to kick some brick through 36 Story Mode levels, including Episode II's newly added high-speed pursuit of bounty hunter Zam Wessell.

Interplanetary gaming: Some good games skimp with online play

Even though we're living in the Age of Don't Let The Terrorists Win, video games continue to obsess over bigger, badder villains. After all these years, Nazis remain the ultimate, unredeemable stinkwads for gamers to shoot in the eyeballs.

Witness Medal of Honor Vanguard. It's the -- wait, let me count; one, two, three -- yes, it's the zillionth World War II game ever made where you play as a soldier who parachutes into battle zones to machine-gun Nazis and Italian fascists.

Sounds like a good online game, right? Well, Vanguard is fairly entertaining when you play against the computer. But there's no option where you get to go online to beat up gamers nicknamed ImGonnaKillYouFromPortland or whatever.

When we hardcore gamers can't fight each other online, we feel limited to a few hours of offline adventure.
