Gamebox shift hits EA's bottom line

No. 1 videogame publisher Electronic Arts saw its net income fall by more than half as heavy spending on the transition to next-generation consoles hit its bottom line.

Net revenue was down 4% at $613 million in the first quarter, the fourth on EA's fiscal calendar.

Excluding an accounting change, net income fell 56% to $19 million.

For the full fiscal year ending March 31, revenue rose 5% to $3.1 billion. Net income, excluding the accounting change, fell 18% to $247 million.

Drop was due to higher costs, especially in research and development, which can be largely attributed to the transition to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii.

Bestselling titles in the past year were "Madden NFL '07," "Need for Speed Carbon," "FIFA '07," "The Sims 2: Pets," "The Sims 2," "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" and "2006 FIFA World Cup," all of which sold more than 3 million units worldwide.

Nintendo Breaks Records with Wii and NIntendo DS

Anyone wondering just how popular Nintendo is these days needs only to read the numbers. According to videogame tracking firm the NPD Group, total sales of videogame hardware, software and accessories in the U.S. in April generated $838.6 million in sales. That’s up 20 percent over last April. Overall game sales year-to-date through April are up 20 percent to $4.2 billion.Videogame hardware units increased 52 percent in April (versus a 10 percent decline last year). Total hardware sales for the month were $338.4 million split between console hardware ($239.4 million) and portable hardware ($99 million). Sales were driven by ongoing strength in Nintendo DS (up 241 percent year-over-year) and Wii (up 39 percent from March to April). Nintendo DS topped all sales in April with 471,000 units sold, followed closely by Nintendo’s Wii with 360,000 units sold.

Wii a winning mix of fun, family, friends and affordability

Computer game makers and industry analysts agree that Wii is trouncing rival video game consoles due to a captivating blend of ease, fun, family, friends and affordability.

April US sales of Wii consoles with simple motion-sensing controllers were more than double those of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and quadruple those of Sony's languishing PlayStation 3.

Demand for Wii consoles has outpaced supply since they debuted in November of 2006. Nintendo has reportedly sold more than 2.5 million Wii consoles in North America.

French video game giant Ubisoft began working with Nintendo a year before Wii launched and premiered sword-fighting game Red Steel at the console's release.

Ubisoft embraces the Wii platform that lets game makers get players to jump, swing, thrash and dart, according to Xavier Poix, director of the firm's Paris and Montpellier studios.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Spotted

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was one of the most innovative games that launched on Xbox. Blending action and stealth elements, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay immersed players in the savage nightmare of Butcher Bay prison. The game took players on a journey through the harsh environments of the slam - dank tunnels, dimly lit corridors, and other hazardous areas filled with enemy guards, savage inmates and deadly creatures that prowl the darkness.

Halo PC Trailer by Microsoft

Microsoft has sent over a trailer of the forthcoming PC version of Halo 2. The video shows a little bit of gameplay as well as hints about the story. Check out the video:

Halo 2 will be one of the first games that will give gamers the first taste of Games for Windows Live. Xbox 360 gamers and PC gamers can play against each other using the online service. However, the Vista version is expected to have new content like new multiplayer Map Editor as well as exciting single-player gameplay. Halo 2 is the sequel to Halo: Combat Evolved.

But the PC version of Halo 2 has been delayed and is expected to be out by May 23. 2007.

Forza Motorsport 2 Goes On Sale May 29

Microsoft announced on Friday that its upcoming Forza Motorsport 2 would be arriving for Xbox 360 on May 29. They timed the announcement to coincide with the Indianapolis 500, which also begins on Friday.
