DS Thrives At Tecmo Nite Out

Team Ninja's Tomonobu Itagaki talked about Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, saying that the development went all out for the franchise's first portable title, and that there's almost a completely new graphics board in the Game Card. The game takes place almost immediately after the events of the Xbox Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black, or the PS3's Ninja Gaiden Sigma, depending on which one you've played. Itagaki demonstrated the game for the audience, the same area that he showed during the original unveiling, and announced that the game would be released in Fall 2007.

Tecmo also announced Kyotaro Nishimura Suspense, an adventure game, which was compared to Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk. The game's story was based on the mystery novels of Japanese author Kyotaro Nishimura, and is slated for a fall release.

Live from Japan: Tecmo's Media Day

As it turns out, Square Enix isn't the only publisher in Tokyo taking advantage of the assembled media, as Tecmo rounded up dozens of journalists and gathered them together in the trendy Shibuya district at Club Camelot to unveil a grip of new software, while bringing us up to date on some other, highly anticipated games.

First, a couple of interesting announcements out of the Tecmo camp. First up, Team NINJA is no longer the only 'team' at Tecmo. While Tecmo has always maintained multiple internal development teams, Team NINJA was the only one with an easily identifiable name. But now, Keisuke Kikuchi -- the producer responsible for the development of games like Super Swing Golf, the Fatal Frame series, Gallop Racer, and Tokobot -- is now heading up an internal development team known as Team Tachyon.

Hands-On: Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword

Can the graphical powerhouse action series make its way to the DS? We got some time with the game-- and Team Ninja's leader, Tomonobu Itagaki.

Check out our exclusive interview with Team Ninja's founder, Tomonobu Itagaki, as he chats candidly about the Ninja Gaiden series and Team Ninja's expansion to new consoles.

While Ninja Gaiden/Black/Sigma may be one of the greatest action games of all time, forgive us if we say the series has grown a little long in the tooth. Sure, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is gorgeous, and could be one of the PS3's best, but it's more of a refinement than a reinvention. For those who hope to teach an old Ninja Dog some new tricks, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword may be the answer to your adrenaline-fueled prayers.

Ninja Gaiden Suited for DS, Not PSP

Tomonobou Itagaki says that a Ninja Gaiden game for PSP would upset his fans. In a recent interview with Gamepro magazine, Itagaki outlined why Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword is fit for Nintendos relatively underpowered handheld. The design philosophy for the PSP as a piece of hardware is a home gaming machine--in terms of specs--you can take with you. If we were gonna make it for PSP, it'd be better for us to make it for a powerful home system instead. The DS is designed under the concept of "What should a portable system be?" instead of trying to replicate the home experience. That's what attracted me to developing on the DS because you can really utilize its strengths as a portable platform. I think if I were to develop this game on the PSP, most of my fans would be upset. Team Ninja has been known for graphically beautiful games in the last few years.
