Brazilians Will Pay $1400 For the Xbox 360

Kotaku reader Marcelo turned us on to this Reuters piece, detailing the upcoming Brazilian launch of Microsoft's Xbox 360. What I thought was going to be a run of the mill launch in a territory that no one cares about... oops, I mean is largely ignored... turned out to be an eye-opening bit of news.

Microsoft will be the first manufacturer to sell direct to the market in Brazil, where importers reign supreme. But this privelege will come at a price: 2999 reias, which currently exchanges at $1400 US. That's a lot of reias! Tough to swallow, as importers will bring a 360 to you for close to half that price.

The premium console package will be bundled with a few games, Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power, which makes the steel-booted kick in the wallet a little easier (games retail for close to $75).

Xbox 360 is the number one and two choice for Xmas

Microsoft today firmly positioned Xbox 360 as the best value gaming gift this Christmas with the announcement of two incredible bundle deals allowing gamers of all budgets to enjoy the worlds most powerful games console.

Offering savings of $100 off the RRP, the Xbox 360 Massive Entertainment Pack is crammed with everything you need to jump into the next generation of gaming. Containing the Xbox 360 wireless video game and entertainment system, an additional wireless controller, plus two great next-generation games: Project Gotham Racing 3 and Dead or Alive 4, it makes for an ideal gift for gaming enthusiasts.

If thats not enough, for a limited time you can also purchase the next-generation Xbox 360 Family Fun Pack and receive a bonus free game. Featuring the Xbox 360 Core Console, Xbox 360 controller and Kameo: Elements of Power, the Family Fun Pack is the perfect gift for the budget-conscious family.

Flying Off The Road With Microsoft Racing Wheel

I make an effort to keep my game-related materials - my consoles, my controllers, my games -tucked away inside cabinets, drawers and on bookshelves. I'm not hiding anything; I simply don't want my apartment to look like the storeroom of an EB Games.

But at this very moment, Microsoft's racing wheel is sitting in the center of my living room. This thing is big. It's heavy. It's shiny. You can't ignore it, can't pretend it's not there. It screams, "Pay attention to me."

If you're the sort of person who's willing to shell out $150 on a racing wheel, maybe you don't mind the amount of real estate it's going to occupy in your living room. Just know at the outset that your wife/girlfriend/significant other will not be pleased to find a big, honking racing wheel clamped to the coffee table.

Cliff dives just don't match slo-mo crashes

When the Xbox 360 came out last year, two of the three best launch titles had gamers behind the wheel of a speeding automobile. Project Gotham Racing 3 featured better visuals than any other game at the time, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted represented an adrenaline-pounding peak for the reliable franchise.

Need for Speed: Carbon is solid, but it's a small disappointment for gamers who were hoping for a showcase driving title for the PS3. The cars handle well and the online options are plentiful, but there isn't a lot of new or exciting content in the game.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted was perfect escapist entertainment, bringing the series to new levels of lawlessness. Along with driving mechanics in the game that were excellent, almost every challenge featured a "Blues Brothers"-style police chase.

Xbox 360 Review - 'Need for Speed: Carbon'

In a crowded launch lineup that featured three solid racing games, Need for Speed: Most Wanted for the Xbox 360 was a surprising breath of fresh air. I had expected little more than a gussied-up port of the Xbox version, but what I got was an excellent port that featured enhancements to both the graphics and gameplay alike. It was the less-rigid, arcade-style alternative to Project Gotham Racing 3, and the more-exciting, less-repetitive substitute for Ridge Racer 6.

Nearly a year has passed since the launch of the Xbox 360, and the racing market is more crowded than ever. In the last several months, we have seen the brilliant port of Burnout Revenge, not to mention the unique Test Drive Unlimited, a casual cruiser that brings commerce and community into the fray. A number of other titles, including Full Auto and MotoGP 06, have taken the basic racing mold in other directions with varying amounts of success.

Project Gotham Racing 3

Something isnt right about Project Gotham Racing 3, but I cant quite put my finger on it. Bizarre Creations have really outdone themselves, and everyone else really when it comes down to the visual side of things. Every inch of the game is utterly stunning. So much so in fact that you have to wonder if this really is running on your Xbox 360. Then common sense kicks in and you curse yourself for thinking of such a poor explanation of how utterly eye-meltingly gorgeous the game looks. Or something like that. Now how on earth can I follow up an opening paragraph like that? Not very easily, so back to the visuals then I suppose. Each of the numerous cities, including old favourites such as London and New York is sprinkled with an almost immaculate attention to detail, though if I want to be picky they still feel just as clinical and lifeless as in previous games.

PlayStation 3 rolls out holiday releases

Over the years, readers have said their favorite video game reviews are the ones where I compare games to pop culture or ex-girlfriends (which ones are high maintenance, etc.). But it's the holidays, so I need to stay in news-you-can-use mode. Hang in there, fans of dating parallels.

Anyway, here's a straight-up look at more releases for the brand-spanking new PlayStation 3.

Ridge Racer 7 -- Once again, you drive super sleek racecars at up to 200 mph and beyond, through concrete jungles of cities, under dark tunnels and around mountain curves.

As usual, you make hairpin turns by briefly letting off the gas, then stomping on the gas while sliding around corners. The courses are pretty, though many seem like leftovers from Ridge Racer 6.

The real value may be in racing up to 14 players online.
