Mass Effect Does for Games What Star Wars Did for Films

Pssst. Jedi wannabes. You might wanna jump ship. A sci-fi force more powerful than Lucas' is coming soon — not to a theater, but to an Xbox 360 near you. The Canadian developer behind 2003's Knights of the Old Republic, a game set in the Star Wars universe, already did what none of the films could do: It let players choose the light or dark side of the Force and influence the plot accordingly.

Now BioWare, based in Edmonton, is ditching George's franchise for its own epic space opera, which will have episodic interludes available for download in between the three major releases. Mass Effect, the first title in this ambitious new trilogy, is due to arrive as early as June. The game casts players in the role of Commander Shepard (shown at center), charges them with defending the galaxy from a race of machines in the 22nd century, and gives them free will.

All juiced up again

Street racer Juiced managed to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of Acclaim before shifting a respectable 1.5 million copies for saviours THQ.

Despite formidable opposition from the likes of EA's Need for Speed and Rockstar's Midnight Club, THQ now want to build Juiced into a strong street racing franchise and are gearing up for a sequel to be released before Christmas on multiple platforms.

Accessibility seems to be the major focus for Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights, plus a smart DNA system that will let you challenge or drive alongside mates even if they're not actually free to play at the same time as you.

Screen Play took the game for a spin this week while chatting with Nick Clarkson from UK developer Juice Games.

Ninja Gaiden, TMNT II hitting the Wii VC

Once again, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) spills the beans on the upcoming video game titles. This time it is about some retro games that will soon hit Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. The games in question are, Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden and Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game.

Ninja Gaiden was first released in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was known as Shadow Warriors in Europe and Australia. A Nintendo DS version known as Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword is also being developed. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game was also launched in 1989 and was later ported to the NES and the Atari ST in 1991. A newer version of the game was released some time back on the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA).

Though the games are listed on the ESRB list, it does not necessarily mean they will be released.

School kids play a video game, work up a sweat

Children don't often yell in excitement when they are let into class, but as the doors opened to the upper level of the gym at South Middle School in Morgantown, W.Va., one recent Monday, the assembled students let out a chorus of shrieks.

In they rushed, past the pingpong table, past the balance beams and the wrestling mats stacked unused. They sprinted past the ghosts of Gym Class Past toward two TV sets looming over square plastic mats on the floor. In less than a minute, a dozen seventh-graders were dancing in furiously kinetic union to the thumps of a techno song called "Speed Over Beethoven."

Bill Hines, a physical education teacher at the school for 27 years, shook his head a little, smiled and said, "I'll tell you one thing: They don't run in here like that for basketball."

It is a scene being repeated across the country as schools deploy the blood-pumping video game "Dance Dance Revolution" as the latest weapon in the nation's battle against the epidemic of childhood obesity.

We predict, they slog away: Star Wars light sabre game coming to ...

The release of the Disney film "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" was accompanied by a Wii game of the same name that lets players use controllers to pretend to be sword-fighting buccaneers.

Yup, that's pretty much what we'd expect now that publishers are getting the idea that the Wiimote can be used like a, well, sword-y sort of thing. You know, you wave it around. Hang on, that sounds like something I mused about back in January:

But the Wii instantly makes the PS3 and Xbox 360 look like the mainframes of the past, stuck in an old paradigm. And today’s kids, of course, are tomorrow’s console buyers too...And if there isn’t someone out there writing a Star Wars game for the Wii, complete with light sabre duels, I’d just like to say: start now and you’ll make a killing next Christmas.
