Nintendo Wii Review: Super Paper Mario

From first glance, Super Paper Mario looks no different than any of the other Mario RPG games, but underneath that characteristic look lies a game that not only changes the way that Mario RPG games have been played, but is a title no Wii owner should be without.

The game opens with a sequence of events that you’l need to watch to understand the game, involving Bowser marrying Princess Peach, with Luigi present at the wedding. Mario, however, is noticeably missing from this scene, hinting that something might just be fishy here.

Turns out Mario was doing the world a favor by keeping Peach out of Bowser’s hands, as their marriage fulfills a prophecy that will bring about the end of the world as we know it, with the nefarious Count Bleck trying to set the whole thing into motion.

Paper Mario Headed to Wii Virtual Console

With games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption not due out until later this summer, and others such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl floating in a sort of release limbo, Super Paper Mario stands as perhaps the only decent Wii release in months for many gamers...at least those who were able to pry one from the dead fingers of their fellow shoppers.

However, Super Paper Mario is actually the third entry in a once-RPG series that started way back on the Nintendo 64 (with Paper Mario) and continued on the GameCube (with Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door). For those of you who've never enjoyed the original, though, Nintendo is giving you another chance.

If CVG, a computer and video gaming site apparently, is to be believed, than the latest issue of Nintendo Power, Nintendo’s official magazine here in the U.S., reveals that the original Paper Mario is headed to the Wii’s Virtual Console.

Wii: Super Paper Mario

Just when you thought the beloved plumber Mario might be nearing the twilight of his more-than quarter-century career, Nintendo comes out with a game for the Wii that pumps new life into two retro video game genres. ''Super Paper Mario'' (Rated E, $49.99) combines the charm and action of an '80s side-scroller with the depth and creativity of a solid role-playing game. This hybrid of sorts of ''Super Mario Bros.'' and ''Paper Mario'' features an elaborate and well-written back story that's explained in detail during a rather long opening sequence. Here's the quick version: The villainous Count Bleck captures Princess Peach and forces her to marry the spiked-shell turtle Bowser, which creates a rift of dark energy. Mario and his friends must gather eight ''pure hearts'' to restore the universe to its normal state.

A double shot of Mario

Much ink has been spilled and rhetoric spouted in debates about the merits of "traditional, old-school" 2-D gaming and "newfangled" 3-D gaming. But everyone seems to agree that game design is what matters, regardless of how many dimensions you're playing in.

Then along comes Super Paper Mario, a game in which you'll spend ample time in both 2-D and 3-D versions of the same cleverly designed game world. This new Wii game starts out looking like the original arcade version of Super Mario Bros. But it gets turned on its side to reveal the 3-D charm hidden behind those flat 2-D levels. It's a familiar story: Mario is rescuing Princess Peach from bad guys yet again. Bowser is involved, of course, but new bad guys make him look like a has-been. This time, Mario will be marching along, bopping toadies on their heads, and all of a sudden he'll encounter a seemingly impassable wall.

Paper Mario to Hop Aboard Virtual Console

With Super Paper Mario as one of the few Wii releases that provides a full gaming experiences instead of just mini-games, Nintendo-heads have Paper Mario on the brain. Perhaps seeking to capitalize on this, Nintendo is planning to release the original N64 Paper Mario on the Wii's Virtual Console soon according to an article in the latest issue of Nintendo Power (via Go Nintendo).

Paper Mario was one of the only RPGs released for the N64 and would help to clear up the drought of RPGs on the Virtual Console. It would also make the complete Paper Mario series (including the Gamecube's Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door) playable on the Nintendo Wii. The only question is whether or not N64 Paper Mario will drop onto VC before or after the classic and much-desired SNES precursor to the Paper Mario series, Super Mario RPG.
