Interviews with Assassins

Last month, I visited Ubisoft Montreal and interviewed Assassin's Creed Creative Director Patrice Desilets and Producer, Jade Raymond for the Official PlayStation Magazine. My feature appears in this month's issue (the one with GTA IV on the cover), but there was lots of interview I couldn't use in the piece. So here it is.

Ubisoft's visually awesome action adventure, set during the violent maelstrom of the Third Crusade, is an enormously ambitious project. The player takes an ambiguous role in the proceedings, an operative of the original assassin sect, your job is to kill nine men with controlling interests in the conflict - but are they part of a larger conspiracy? Think Leon meets the Da Vinci Code in downtown Damascus.

It's an interesting concept, made more intriguing by regular hints that this might all be a virtual reality simulation, or a 'genetic memory'.

Sony's profts hit by PS3 costs

The Japanese electronics giant Sony saw profits tumble 64pc last year as it sold its Playstation 3 games console at an initial loss to stimulate sales.

The company said that that pre-tax profits were down to 102bn yen (£426.7m) in the 12 months to March from 286.3bn yen, though sales climbed to 8.3 trillion yen from 7.51 trillion yen. Delays in the production of PlayStation 3, which was launched in November, has left Sony trailing behind Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in global sales of the latest set of consoles. Ken Kutaragi, the man behind Sony's playstations, is stepping down next month after the production difficulties. Nintendo's Wii, which retails for about $250, more than twice that of the PlayStation 3, has proved a hit. Nintendo now expects to sell 14 million of the consoles this financial year.

Comment of Week on Wii vs Sony PS3 VR 3D Game Controller by YO

This is what Sony has been talking about all this time. Ever since the movie Minority Report in I think 2001 Sony has said they've always wanted to replicate the motion gloves that Tom Cruise uses. There are inteviews from Phil Harison dated in 2002 with him talking about motion control and patents that have been filed with motion technology all way before Nintendo had the idea to add motion control. Sony copied Nintendo? give me a break. Sony has interviews, article wriiten upon it, patents filed all for motion control and eyetoy with motion control all before Nintendo announced it. Nintendo came up with motion controllers first why becasue they announced it first? no its not who announces it first came up with the idea first. You have motion control for the PS2 so because Nintendo annouced it for the Wii does this mean Sony can't have motion for the PS3? Bollocks to that, Nintendo copied and they are ruthless business men just like everyone else.

Video Games: More `Raving Rabbids'

_KING UBI: The most consistently intriguing "third-party" publisher of video games (that is, a company not named Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft) is France's Ubisoft, which has developed a reputation for solid quality over a range of genres. Ubisoft made a big splash at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), and warmed up for this year's show with its own "UbiDays" events in Paris and San Francisco.

Ubisoft spent most of UbiDays showing off the progress made on previously announced titles like "Assassin's Creed" and "Haze," but the best news was the announcement of a sequel to "Rayman Raving Rabbids." This time, the bunnies will be wreaking havoc on Nintendo machines only — which makes sense, since the original "Rabbids" was so much more fun on the Wii than on other consoles.

Lionhead Diaries Go Behind the Scenes with Fable 2

We've always wondered when Microsoft would start putting their Xbox Live service to use and bring gamers more game-centric video content, and beginning today, Microsoft started publishing episodes of the Lionhead Video Diaries, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Fable 2. The videos will feature voiceovers by none other than Peter Molyneux, head honcho at Lionhead Studios. Each episode will be made available both on Xbox Live and Lionhead's site, where the first episode is already posted.

Molyneux is particularly well-known in the industry for hyping his game's to an intense level. As such, this first ep, recorded in March 2007 and focusing on "Emotion in Action Games," does feature a bit of the classic Molyneux enthusiasm. "You feeling loved is really important to us," Molyneux says, while quick clips of a beautiful-looking Fable 2 flash on TV screens in the background.

This morning, we got some new details regarding Bizarre's Project Gotham Racing 4. First on the list was information regarding the new career mode. Driveres will be rewarded with a growing fanbase that'll cheer them on, react to their every move and support them through victory. One of the most appealing new gameplay elements is the dynamic weather system. Now racing through a track can means facing an unexpected rain storm or snow flurries in the middle of a race. This results in changing physics when powering around a corner on the wet or icy surface in Shanghai and St. Petersburg or any of the game's 10 other locations. Weather changes won't be the only element that brings added excitement and challenge to the game. Flair and driving style will now be just as important as technical skill, as players passing their opponent at full speed will pump their fists and exhibit more emotion as they earn recognition with the revised Kudos system.
