EFCC raids telecom outfit, shuts down FM radio station in Enugu

OFFICIALS of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, raided the offices of Enugu-based telecommunications outfit, Rainbownet Ltd and shut down a private radio station, COSMOS FM also in the Coal City.

Premises of both organisations at the Ebeano Housing Estate near New Haven, Enugu, were sealed with stickers bearing “EFCC Under Investigation" posted on the walls. The reason for the raid was not immediately known but the two organisations were mentioned in petitions written by a former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Christian Onoh and a former local government chairman, Rev Oscar Egwuonwu against the state governor, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani whom they alleged owned the outfits through his proxies.

Some officials of both establishments were whisked away by the EFCC personnel after the raid but while COSMO FM was shut down, Rainbownet was allowed to continue rendering its fixed wireless and other telecommunication services.

Feyenoord win to end black week

Feyenoord earned themselves a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Heerenveen to make an end to what has been a difficult week for the Rotterdam outfit. A group of 25 former players, including club legend Coun Moulijn gathered on the pitch ahead of the match to condemn the crowd trouble that occured before and during the UEFA Cup match in Nancy on Thursday. The fans showed to share that opinion and remained standing in protest during the first ten minutes of the match. On the pitch meanwhile, visitors SC Heerenveen took the lead through Afonso Alves in the 23rd minute and it looked like it was going to be another tough afternoon for the hosts. Stein Huysegems took responsibility however and turned things around with goals in the 45th and 51st minutes. A spotkick from Theo Lucius set the score to 3-1 in the 64th minute and the match seemed practically decided.

Northampton 18 Leicester 5

Leicester boss Pat Howard's decision to hand youth its chance at Franklin's Gardens backfired as an under-strength Tigers outfit were mauled by Northampton.

England Under-19 internationals Tom Youngs and Ollie Dodge were handed their first starts for Leicester, but a Saints team, missing the likes of Carlos Spencer and Ben Cohen, scored two early tries to all but decide the derby before the break.

The experience of Northampton showed straight from kick-off as they broke the Tigers defence with ease.

Quick ball out to the right touchline allowed France Under-21 winger Matthieu Bourret, on his home debut, to run in the opening points of the EDF Energy group match and his first of the season.

Former rugby league star Stephen Myler was unable to convert, but he made no mistake from a penalty minutes later.

Specialized outfit bids farewell

Nearly four years into the war in Iraq, deployment ceremonies might seem routine for military installations.

But not at Fort Leavenworth.

When post officials said farewell to the 705th Military Police Internment and Resettlement Battalion on Friday, the men and women were the first active duty unit to deploy from the post since World War II. Several individuals have deployed — a colonel assigned to the fort was killed in action last month — but the small post has few units eligible for deployment.

Until recently the mission of Fort Leavenworth's MP unit was largely limited to corrections work inside the well-known U.S. Disciplinary Barracks.

The mission was modified in 2005 when the unit became eligible for work overseas.
