17:08 Datel accessory allows complex Wii tinkering (0)

There have been plenty of third party accessories released for the Nintendo Wii since its release late last year, dozens of company's desperate to persuade consumers to part with a little more cash, whether it be to enhance their gaming experience directly (sword and shield props for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, anyone?) or by more complex means, as with Datel's Wii Drive Doctor, dubbed 'the ultimate home mod tool' for Nintendo's latest console.

Datel, well known for their invention of videogame enhancement products (perhaps best recognised as the creator of the best-selling Action Replay brand of cheat systems), have now come up with a device which allows Wii owners to connect their console to the PC using a USB cable. Once the two machines are getting along merrily, you'll be able to check on and even tinker on all sorts of computer-related techno-wizardry, from control commands to entering code into the Wii's data stream.

Midway to come out with Two Exclusive Wii Titles

Midway CEO David Zucker has revealed in an interview that they are planning to make three titles for the Wii, two of which will be exclusive to Nintendo's next-gen console. One of the games for the Wii that will be launched by Midway is Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

David Zucker told Gamasutra, “We are very thrilled by the strong response of gamers and the press alike to the launch of The Lord of The Rings Online, and we are encouraged by the early excitement we are seeing for such front-line titles as Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii, Stranglehold, BlackSite: Area 51, The Wheelman, Unreal Tournament III and Hour of Victory. As the next generation systems build momentum through this year, we believe we are well situated to take advantage of the growing base of gamers looking for the highest quality content."

Zucker made these statements after announcing that Midway had reported sales of $11.1 million and losses of about $19.8 million.

The Price Is Not Right

All this talk about which console manufacturer is providing the consumer the greatest value is missing the point. The market has already decided how much a gaming system is worth. The answer? Probably not much more than $250.

Let's look at current generation console prices to date, in U.S. dollars. Nintendo's Wii rings up at about $250. Microsoft's Xbox 360's three flavors include the $300 Core pack, the $400 Premium edition, and the $480 Elite. Sony's PlayStation 3 is available in $500 and $600 options. All other things being equal, the Wii's price is obviously the most attractive, which might explain why it's outselling the 360 by about 2-to-1, and the PS3 by about 4-to-1.

But all other things are not equal, of course. Not even close. Any gamer with even passing familiarity with all three systems could expound on their individual hardware strengths and weaknesses.
