Apple Games Features Age Of Empires III

The Apple Games website recently posted a new feature focusing on Age of Empires III, the latest Mac game in the popular real time strategy series. AoE III introduces 3D graphics and a "home city" feature to the mix, as well as a variety of other innovations. The article examines the game and offers commentary from the lead designer.Explosions are a big part of Age of Empires IIIs look, which takes the series into 3D graphics for the first time. New techniques allow water to move realistically and accurately reflect objects in or near it, while buildings burst into flame and crumble during an enemy bombardment. New geometric features enabled Streets team to create the realistic overhangs and steep cliffs found in places like the American Southwest

This emphasis on visuals is something we learned while developing Age of Mythology, Street points out.

IMG Interview: Ensemble's Greg Street

Games don't just appear out of thin air. Games are created by teams of designers and programers toiling in small underground vaults, unaware of the world above. At least, that's the information to which I'm privy. At any rate, games do require designers and Age of Empires III is no exception. Recently, I had the chance to chat with Greg Street, leader of the design team at Ensemble Studios that created Age of Empires III, about his role at Ensemble, what gamers can expect from this latest generation of the Age of Empires series and other industry related topics of interest. This is a good read, trust me.

Michael Phillips: First, could you tell us a bit about yourself and what it means to be Lead Designer at Ensemble Studios?

Greg Street: My name is Greg Street. I am a former (I like to say recovering) marine biologist who made a career change into gaming about eight years ago.

GameRanger goes Universal

GameRanger, the popular Mac game finding and chat service, is now available as a Universal binary. The version 4.6 release is in circulation; GameRanger users will be automatically updated on their next connection.

GameRanger is used by commercial, shareware and freeware games as a game matching service — GameRanger users can join or host online games, access master lists of servers, and chat with each other. The service is offered in a basic free form or a premium tier that provides additional capabilities, such as in-game voice chat, a ranking system, buddy list groups and more.

Besides Universal binary support for PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, GameRanger 4.6 also contains several other changes, including support for Age of Empires III, Civilization IV: Warlords and Imperial Glory, improved network transport system for games including Raven Shield, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake, and more.

A livid Gareth Southgate accused Cristinao Ronaldo of being a cheat after the Portuguese winger 'won' a controversial penalty for ManYoo during the Premiership leaders' 2-1 win at the Riverside on Saturday night.

No stranger to such controversies, Ronaldo was adjudged to have been felled by Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer with nineteen minutes of the match elapsed. Referee Chris Foy awarded the penalty, which Louis Saha duly converted, but slow-motion replays indicated that no contact had been made.

"It was always a very tough game for us, they're the best side at the moment in the league, but obviously it's made a lot harder when you go behind to a goal like that," fumed the Middlesbrough manager.

Asked directly whether he believed Ronaldo was a cheat, Southgate replied: "Yes, it's as simple as that.

Sony's official list is online and searchable.

November 20, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment has created an official backwards compatibility checklist site for looking up the compatibility status on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles. Rather than printing a flat list of 8,000 or so titles, Sony has created a search engine that allows you to look up any PSone or PS2 game and it'll tell you if it has any problems and what they are.

For instance, when searching for ICO you'll find that "Throughout gameplay and FMA's, the screen flickers." And when looking up Final Fantasy XI you'll find that "Users are unable to play titles that require HDD for PlayStation 2. This condition is planned to be resolved in the future with a system software update for PS3."
