PS3 to launch with free online gaming and 21 games

Those who were concerned that they might be forced to play mainly PS2 games on their new premium price PS3 console can stop worrying. Sony has revealed that there will be at least 21 games available in the US on launch day November 17. In addition the provision of free online gaming may be Sony's ace card.

NHL Skinny: Net Platoons

If The Skinny has learned one thing in the early going of the 2006-07 fantasy hockey season, it's that goalies are the new running back. In the post-lockout, high-octane NHL, point-per-game scorers are scattered around the free agent pool like discarded betting slips at the racetrack. But a productive No. 3 fantasy goalie? Forget it. A quick scan of two expert league available player lists reveals a total of three goalies with wins available in one league and four in another.

Fantasy owners have their hands forced, really. Goalie platoons are all the rage these days. Both Anaheim and San Jose are employing 1, 1a rotations, and both are Western Conference favorites. Montreal hasn't named a No. 1, Boston isn't sure who will go from night-to-night and all around the league guys not named Martin Brodeur or Marty Turco are realizing that a night off every now and then isn't a bad thing.

Sidelines: Alaways wins gold at senior games

Chico's Del Alaways won two gold medals and one silver in the 75-79 age group at the 20th World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, duplicating what he did there last year.

Qualifying for a gold medal in his first javelin throw, Alaways then moved ahead of Larry Horine of Texas, who was ranked No. 1 in the world rankings, on his second throw by 3 feet. Alaways then exceeded that distance by 5 feet with his third throw of 123 feet, 9 inches, which exceeded his personal best by 2 feet which he set two years ago at Pasadena.

Alaways also easily won the discus throw by 10 feet, with a throw of almost 96 feet. He won a silver in the shot put with a heave of 30-4, missing another gold by 8 inches.

Alaways has accumulated 65 gold medals in just four years of competing, moving up from being ranked 23rd in the world his first year to the No.

PlayStation 3 Info, Launch Releases, and upcoming Cheats

The PlayStation 3 is Sony's newest effort to their highly successful line of PlayStation consoles. The third generation of PlayStation will be released in the United States on November 17, 2006, although it appears that initial quantities will be quite limited. Oddly enough, after stating that they were prepared for a word wide launch, Sony switched the European PS3 release date to March of 2007. Perhaps this is due to Microsoft's somewhat botched launch of the Xbox 360, a direct competitor of the upcoming PS3 unit, along with the Nintendo Wii.

Sony has stated that the PlayStation 3 console will be backwards compatible with all previously released PS One and PS2 video games. The PS3 will come in two flavors, the biggest difference of the two will be the size of the hard drive. The PS3 Basic will have a 20 gig hard drive and the PS3 Premium will have a 60 gig hard drive.

News for nerds, stuff that matters

Tom Leupold, writing for the Inside Bay Area site, explores why videogames have become an American bogeyman. Talking with prof. Dmitri Williams, he discusses the rise, fall, and resurrection of games as a part of mainstream society. From the article: "Today, as games have once again infiltrated the mainstream, a growing number of adults are again enjoying gaming and understand there are games that are appropriate for different age groups. But that hasn't stopped crusaders from trying to censor them in the name of 'saving' the children. Williams, 34, said those under 38 have a different view of games than their elders. Most have grown up with games and, like television for the previous generation, games are embedded in their culture.

Microsoft Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive

Attempting to counter the Blu-ray boost that's likely to come with the PlayStation 3 launch, Microsoft is presenting its own affordable next-gen video option in the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player. The external player is due out in late November for $200 and will come with a copy of King Kong on HD-DVD as well as the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote. The drive connects via USB to the Xbox 360 system, which runs $300 to $400.

Upside: At a combined cost of $500 to $600, the Xbox 360 and HD-DVD represent a terrific bundled value. For the price of an entry-level HD-DVD player--the Toshiba HD-A1-- you can get a next-gen gaming console and an HD-DVD disc player. Making the HD-DVD drive external just makes good business sense for Microsoft. Unlike the upcoming PlayStation 3, the addition of the next-gen movie player is completely optional, meaning that gamers can play high-def games for a few hundred dollars less, or watch high-def movies for the same price.

IN DEVELOPMENT: October 17-18, 2006

Colorado 14ers ---> With heavy, wet snowflakes painting the landscape Tuesday, a construction crew was forced to hold a tarp over their co-workers laying a sidewalk leading to the Broomfield Event Center. Finishing touches are being applied to the BEC and there's no time to stop.

Colorado's newest entertainment facility will open Nov. 9 with a Bonnie Raitt concert, followed by the home opener of the Rocky Mountain Rage minor league hockey team the next night. "We'll probably be working up to an hour before the Bonnie Raitt concert," one construction worker quipped during the Daily Camera's tour of the BEC. But the truth is, 99 percent of the work is done and officials are ready to show off the BEC.

The 6,000-seat arena was built at a cost of about $45 million to house minor league hockey and basketball teams, as well as concerts and family entertainment events such as the circus, ice capades, trade shows and graduations.
