Mod chip seller hit with million-dollar damages

Mod chip seller Divineo and two other defendants are on the hook for over $9 million in damages after a federal court judge found that they had violated the DMCA by selling mod chips for consoles. The defendants were accused by Sony of trafficking in mod chips as well as the application HDLoader, which allows owners of the PlayStation 2 console to rip and store PS2 games on a hard drive attached to the system.

Divineo is a company based in France that sells parts, accessories, and until recently, mod chips for the Xbox, Xbox 360, PSOne, PS2, GameCube, and other systems.

Although gamers like HDLoader because it allows them to quickly and conveniently access their entire game collections from a hard drive, Sony hates it because of the potential for piracy. HDLoader turns your PS2 into a game jukebox, as Ben said in his review, but the fact that it is also a portable jukebox that can be connected to any system troubles Sony and the Entertainment Software Association immensely.

Your Mother Plays Video Games

Popcap Games, creators of the wildly popular video game Bejeweled, has released a study which profiles casual game players. Casual games, which are graphically simple and do not require the large time commitment of online games like World of Warcraft, are by far the most popular game types in the US, with 29% of video game players rating them as their favorite genre in a May 2006 study sponsored by AOL. In this light, action games like Halo are an also-ran to casual alternatives like the numerical puzzle game sudoku.

Yet most casual games are either free or played via low-cost subscription, compared to Halo 2's $125 million opening day retail take. Why should marketers bother with what some might see as a mass market of cheapskates? Simply put, because that is where the eyeballs are.

Poker: Worth the Gamble?

Tune into ESPN anytime and you1ll see professionals, as well as amateurs, competing on a green field, but in this sport there are no pads.

Since ESPN started airing the World Series of Poker, or WSOP, the numbers of players entering the online tournaments have grown exponentially.

The entrance fee for the tournament is usually $10,000; most amateur or part-time players don't have that kind of cash to throw away. This is part of the reason online gambling has become so popular.

While walking though the halls of SHU you will come across posters and advertisements for the online gambling site PartyPoker.com. The site offers education for beginners and security for players investing real money.

Players who feel their game is up to par can venture over to virtual tables to play for real money.

PS2 Review: Bully

It's a tale of revenge and terror. The story of two kids who were kicked and beaten down by society until one morning they woke up, went bowling and decided to take a few extra toys to class... WHOOPS, my mistake, that's Columbine. Hmm I wonder how I could possibly have mistaken Bully for Columbine? I mean, the two are nothing alike.

Bully is the tale of Jimmy Hopkins, your average latchkey kid with a troubled past. Having been expelled from every school he's ever attended, Bullworth Academy is Jimmy's last hope. To make matters worse, his rather unconcerned parents have just left for their fifth, year-long, honeymoon - leaving troubled Jimmy as a burden on the school and not on their own decadent lives.

Like The Warriors and GTA before it, Bully continues the Rockstar tradition of incredibly rich sandbox game play.

News for nerds, stuff that matters

Tom Leupold, writing for the Inside Bay Area site, explores why videogames have become an American bogeyman. Talking with prof. Dmitri Williams, he discusses the rise, fall, and resurrection of games as a part of mainstream society. From the article: "Today, as games have once again infiltrated the mainstream, a growing number of adults are again enjoying gaming and understand there are games that are appropriate for different age groups. But that hasn't stopped crusaders from trying to censor them in the name of 'saving' the children. Williams, 34, said those under 38 have a different view of games than their elders. Most have grown up with games and, like television for the previous generation, games are embedded in their culture. " .

Game makers up to challenges of creating iPod games

Game developers tasked with creating the first full-fledged games for the iPod faced the challenges of developing for a new platform while dealing with Apple's desire to keep every detail closely under wraps. But it's a challenge the game makers were unable to resist, given the popularity of Apple's handheld music player.

"We think iPod gaming is a big opportunity," said Dave Roberts, CEO of PopCap Games, whose Bejeweled and Zuma are among the nine iPod games available for sale at the iTunes Store. Other iPod games announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during his September 12 presentation to the press include Tetris, mahjong, and mingolf games from Electronic Arts; Fresh Games's cube-based puzzle game Cubis 2; the arcade classic Pac-Man from Namco Networks; and a Texas Hold'em poker game and brickbashing title called Vortex developed internally at Apple.

Poker Strategies - The Art of Bluffing

In order to really understand the competitive beauty of poker, you need to accept the fact that a good liar can make a great poker player. Acting like you've got something - or pretending like you don't - can take you a long way in a poker tournament, so becoming an expert in bluffing can almost guarantee at least mild success. Personally I love to bluff; it stirs the pot and keeps people from getting a pinpoint idea of the cards you are playing. If you win a hand or two with a solid bluff and your opponent knows this, you're letting your opponent know that you are not afraid of losing and that "you won't be pushed around".

So what is a bluff? Bluffing is representing what you don't have, hoping to win a pot you have no business winning. But remember, your bluffs have to make sense.

Ontario follows US lead in going after online gambling with bill ...

The recent bill signed by George Bush and the private member's bill issued by Jeff Leal in Ontario, Canada, are designed to curtail online betting. In both cases, the governments want you to feel that they are somehow making a dent in the area of problem gambling, particularly among young people by stomping out sports and poker betting online. At the same time, the U.S. government has created an exemption for horse racing and lotteries and in Canada, Jeff Leal himself stated that the main concern with online gambling is that it is taking away revenue from the lotteries, race tracks and the video lottery terminals located at the racetrack.

So the question has to be asked? Who exactly bets online and who plays the land based lottery and video lottery terminals. I've taken a random sample of lottery fact sheets posted online by 5 states, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, New York and Oregon.
