The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Spotted

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was one of the most innovative games that launched on Xbox. The game surpassed DOOM in terms of visuals and offered some new gameplay mechanics that consolidated Starbreeze as a top-class worldwide developer. Vivendi Games' Sierra Entertainment has revealed on Spike TV's GameHead that it has teamed up with Tigon Games, Starbreeze Studios and Universal Pictures to bring a next-generation version of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Blending action and stealth elements, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay immersed players in the savage nightmare of Butcher Bay prison. The game took players on a journey through the harsh environments of the slam - dank tunnels, dimly lit corridors, and other hazardous areas filled with enemy guards, savage inmates and deadly creatures that prowl the darkness.

Wal-Mart and Microsoft Sued Over Fire Allegedly Started by XBox

A lawsuit has been filed that names Wal-Mart, Microsoft, and an unnamed power supply manufacturer as defendants. According to the suit, which seeks in excess of $50,000 in unspecified damages, the wiring connecting an XBox 360 to an electrical outlet overheated and started a catastrophic fire that claimed the life of Wade Kline, an infant that lived in the house in Warsaw, IL. "The fire was a direct and proximate result of the overheating of the game's power supply and wiring," says the complaint. Wal-Mart has already filed a motion to move the case from state court to federal court.

Here's an interesting point. The suit alleges that the fire was started by an XBox 360. But, the fire took place in December of 2004, prior to the launch of the 360. So, was the fire caused by one of the original XBox systems (which had more than 14 million Xbox power cords recalled in February of 2005, citing fire concerns), or is this just an attempt to drag a little cash out of the big boys?

A Microsoft spokesman said, "Microsoft recently learned about this tragic incident that occurred in December 2004.

Hour of Victory Demo Goes 'Live' Next Week

Shipping this June, Midway's Hour of Victory enters into a genre with plenty of entrenched enemy forces -- Call of Duty, Medal of Honor -- making the game a bit of a tough sell. The publisher should be (if it's not already) hoping that the demo it's releasing on Xbox Live next week helps secure some fans. Unfortunately, early word on it isn't sounding all that great, but you guys will be able to judge for yourselves soon.

According to Midway, the demo is coming sometime next week, but no date is specified. The single-player demo shows off the North African level and offers three ways to play it: as the "covert operative" who prefers stealth to flashy entrances; the Army Ranger who can "snipe from afar;" or the British Commando who'll "storm the gates."

Hour of Victory will be the first WII game on shelves utilizing the Unreal 3 Engine.

Xbox Live provokes profits: in the black by 2008

I can quite easily imagine my bank manager's face if I went to him and said "I'm planning to work at a loss, if that's okay, and build up a few million in debt" - in fact I can imagine the sound thrashing he'd give me - but things obviously work differently in games console land. We already knew that Microsoft had applied some still-leaky sutures to the gushing wound that is their Entertainment and Devices Division, bringing losses down to a mere $315m; now division president Robbie Bach has given an interview assuring us that through a complicated sum of Xbox Live revenue and game royalties the console will actually turn a profit next year.

This should be good news for anyone with stocks in Microsoft, but it makes for interesting reading even if you're neither much of a gamer nor an investor.
