News for nerds, stuff that matters

Tom Leupold, writing for the Inside Bay Area site, explores why videogames have become an American bogeyman. Talking with prof. Dmitri Williams, he discusses the rise, fall, and resurrection of games as a part of mainstream society. From the article: "Today, as games have once again infiltrated the mainstream, a growing number of adults are again enjoying gaming and understand there are games that are appropriate for different age groups. But that hasn't stopped crusaders from trying to censor them in the name of 'saving' the children. Williams, 34, said those under 38 have a different view of games than their elders. Most have grown up with games and, like television for the previous generation, games are embedded in their culture. " .

Mod chip seller hit with million-dollar damages

Mod chip seller Divineo and two other defendants are on the hook for over $9 million in damages after a federal court judge found that they had violated the DMCA by selling mod chips for consoles. The defendants were accused by Sony of trafficking in mod chips as well as the application HDLoader, which allows owners of the PlayStation 2 console to rip and store PS2 games on a hard drive attached to the system.

Divineo is a company based in France that sells parts, accessories, and until recently, mod chips for the Xbox, Xbox 360, PSOne, PS2, GameCube, and other systems.

Although gamers like HDLoader because it allows them to quickly and conveniently access their entire game collections from a hard drive, Sony hates it because of the potential for piracy. HDLoader turns your PS2 into a game jukebox, as Ben said in his review, but the fact that it is also a portable jukebox that can be connected to any system troubles Sony and the Entertainment Software Association immensely.

Mod-Chip Retailer Sued

It just doesnt pay to sell mod-ships for consoles, does it? If you are tossed in jail, saddled with probation or house arrest, you end up getting sued for $9 million dollars. Ouch.

Sony has slapped them with a $9 million lawsuit for selling the chips, along with HDLoader, which allows a PS2 to rip games and store them to a HDD for "jukebox" access. Until recently, Divineo was selling a whole bevy of Xbox, Xbox 360, PSOne, PS2, GameCube and other system mod-chips.

Sony busts down mod-chip retailer with $9 mil. lawsuit

Everybody's favorite far-reaching, possibly free speech-infringing law, the DMCA, is being put to use again for busting down on Divineo, a seller of mod-chips. They've also got other slightly more innocuous devices like that snazzy 4GB DS-Xtreme which gives you homebrew action on the DS without any hacking. Though, we're not sure such attempts of theirs at semi-legibility will do much to appease Sony. There's no official response from Divineo yet, but since they're a France-based company, it seems like the best Sony can do with the DMCA is get them out of the states.

Xbox Live Hits 4 Million

Microsoft has announced that its Xbox Live service has reached the 4 million subscriber mark. What's more, it expects to log 6 million users by June 2007. It has also stated that 70 percent of its users are downloading content and 9 million voice and text messages are sent weekly.

So the 3rd Gen console war is on the brink of beginning and Microsoft has already declared a significant market foothold. Perhaps going to retail early, with little product, was indeed the way to go? I guess we'll see when the Wii and the PS3 drop.

Microsoft adds an HD player for Xbox console

TOKYO -- Microsoft Corp. is introducing an external high-definition DVD player for the Xbox 360 video game console to match the Blu-ray disc functions of Sony Corp.'s upcoming PlayStation 3. The software maker also announced Wednesday it will launch the Xbox 360 in India this week and in Africa next week.

The rollout plans come as the company tries to shore up sales ahead of the arrival later this year of next-generation machines by its two top rivals -- Sony and Nintendo Co.

The basic Xbox 360 doesn't come with high-definition DVD capability. The new Microsoft peripheral, to be launched in Japan on Nov. 22, is based on the HD DVD standard, a rival technology to the Blu-ray format Sony is using for the HD player built into its anxiously awaited upgrade to the PlayStation line.

PC Game Review: Battlefield 2142

Yes, EA and Dice are at it again with the newest installment of the Battlefield franchise. Boasting that ever familiar 64-player, arcade styled, jump-into-any-vehicle-at-any-time, team killing, explosion filled, sniper-whoring, and spawn-camping fest that we lovingly call the "Battlefield Multiplayer Experience," and oh how we love it so.

This game will be familiar to anyone who has played Battlefield 2, so familiar in fact that Battlefield 2142 almost seems like a mod, or a flimsy upgrade with higher system requirements (and this game is quite demanding). It has the same squad-system, commander system, and ranking system.

The story is pretty basic, it's set in the 22nd Century, after a new ice age in which the ice from the North Pole spreads and pretty much destroys hundreds of countries including North America.

Billboard album reviews: Jimmy Buffett

ARTIST: JIMMY BUFFETT

ALBUM: TAKE THE WEATHER WITH YOU

NEW YORK (Billboard) - 2004's "License to Chill" was the first No. 1 album of Jimmy Buffett's three-decade career, so it's no surprise that he goes country again for a set that's breezy even by his flip-floppy standards. "Weather" is heavy on covers but boasts a wider palette of them, as Buffett works in Crowded House ("Weather With You," incongruously featuring Gomez), Mark Knopfler (who penned and plays on the gorgeous "Whoop Dee Doo"), Merle Haggard ("Silver Wings") and Guy Clark ("Cinco de Mayo in Memphis"). There's a nice sense of self-awareness here; "It seems I've run out of reasons to be here, so I'm just gonna steal from myself," he smirks in the faux-calypso "Party at the End of the World," before tossing off a quick rhyme about attitudes and latitudes.

Kings use four power-play goals to top Coyotes

Mathieu Garon stopped all 40 shots he faced as Los Angeles scored four power-play goals, including three straight to start the game en route to a 4-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

,Alexander Frolov, Anze Kopitar and Michael Cammalleri each had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who halted a four-game losing streak and won for the first time in Phoenix since March 10, 2004.

Goaltender Michael Morrison lasted just one period for the Coyotes, yielding three goals on 13 shots. Curtis Joseph took over in the second period and finished with 17 saves.

Just over four minutes into the first period, Ed Jovanovski was whistled for a delay-of-game penalty after hitting the puck over the glass and the Kings quickly paid for the mistake as Frolov knocked the puck off the back of Morrison's head and into the net just 41 seconds later.
