The New Console Wars 411 Roundtable: Part II

Welcome to the long overdue second part of the 411 Games: New Console Wars roundtable. Blame work, school, and my computer breaking down the exact same day in which I was going to post this. But fear not, I am back with a new video card and a fixed Ethernet port. Part II focuses of our writers opinions on all three consoles. Without further ado, here we go! NOTE: All writers opinions were collected before the Wii and PS3 launches. Armando Rodriguez: Self proclaimed PREVIEW KING, author of Cheap Gaming 101 Microsoft Xbox 360 - I think the 360 is the best deal right now. It has a one year advantage, which means that there is a wide variety of games to choose from and with long awaited releases like Halo 3, Gears of War, Forza 2 and Fable 2 coming soon, it is going to get better. Sure, it is not as powerful as the PS3, but power doesnt equal quality.

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond recently shot into the spotlight at Microsoft's X06 event where she received a bigger round of applause than Peter Moore - and that's before she even had a chance to say anything! Having previously worked on The Sims Online for EA, she now heads up the core team responsible for the Prince of Persia series. Assassin's Creed is an extraordinarily good-looking game where you take on the role of a medieval hitman during the Crusades. It promises to be far more thoughtful and inventive than anything we've seen before in an action game. .

Report: Sony Dragged Its Feet And Lost Exclusives

When Ubisoft's ultra-impressive-looking title, Assassin's Creed, was unveiled this past spring, the game was accompanied by a lot of "oohs" and "ahs." At the time, it was believed Creed would be a PS3 exclusive.

Initially, Ubisoft toyed with the idea of whether or not they'd take the game multiplatform. And even though they never mentioned any platform but the PS3, Microsoft's X05 show last year listed a game called, Project Assassin. Then, after a lot more waiting, Ubi finally came clean and announced Assassin's Creed would be available for the Xbox 360 and PC in addition to the PS3.

Now it appears that a recent Newsweek article indicates that the game was designed to be a PS3 exclusive. According to correspondent N'Gai Croal's blog, Level Up, both Creed and Grand Theft Auto IV were originally supposed to debut only on the PS3.

How Sony Lost PS3 Exclusives

According to Newsweek, Sony's Ken Kutaragi's "slowness", created an opening for Microsoft to jump in and bring over hits like GTA IV and Assassin's Creed to the Xbox 360.

Newsweek correspondant N'Gai Croal reported that both GTA IV and Assassin's Creed were meant to be PS3 exclusives- much like GTA III was originally a PS2 exclusive- but inaction by Sony led them to lose their exclusivity on both games.

"We've learned that Take-Two [Interactive] and Rockstar Games were interested in continuing their longtime relationship with Sony, in which they premiered their Grand Theft Auto games on PlayStation platforms exclusively for 6-12 months before bringing them to other systems," wrote Croal. "Also, Ubisoft was interested in making Assassin's Creed, due in stores next spring, exclusive to the PS3."

"For the greater part of this year, PlayStation chief Ken Kutaragi hadn't finalized the business terms for independent publishers on the PS3," wrote Croal.

nabs former PS3 exclusives

Having used their vast resources and slow decision making at Sony to snatch former PS3 exclusives Assassin's Creed and GTA IV for the Xbox 360, Microsoft has today also landed Fatal Inertia and Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War. The Koei titles were, as with the previous titles, originally envisaged as PS3 only games, but will now be released on the Xbox 360 as well as Sony's next-gen platform.

Fatal Inertia is being created by Koei Canada under the watchful eye of Dynasty Warriors creator Takazumi Tomoike. An octane-fueled mix of racing and demolition derby is promised. Bladestorm meanwhile is set in 14th century Europe, offering real-time strategy as you take charge of a mercenary leader. The games will be out alongside the PS3 in Europe (hopefully next March), though it is presently unclear when they will reach the 360.

Kutaragi 'slowness' lost PS3 exclusives

A report in Newsweek, exposed last night by GameSpot, reveals that Assassin's Creed and GTA IV could have been PS3 exclusive titles, were it not for dallying at Sony Japan - with the report singling out CEO Ken Kutaragi. Whilst it was originally unclear what platforms Assassin's Creed would be created for, the reason for the confusion is perhaps now more obvious, with the Newsweek report claiming that Ubisoft hoped to tie-up an exclusivity deal, but had to go multiplatform after Sony waited too long to offer the terms of the deal.

In his personal blog, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal adds to the Assassin's Creed story, stating "We've learned that Take-Two and Rockstar Games were interested in continuing their longtime relationship with Sony, in which they premiered their Grand Theft Auto games on PlayStation platforms exclusively for 6-12 months before bringing them to other systems."

Report: 'Slow' Sony lost PS3 exclusives

This spring, Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed, a visually stunning PlayStation 3 stealth-action game that impressed members of the gaming press at E3.

While the French publisher dropped plenty of story details about the game, which is set in medieval Jerusalem during the Crusades, it danced around the question of whether the game would be exclusive to Sony's new console. Though early Assassin's Creed press releases only mentioned the PS3, the game was shown off at Microsoft's X05 event last autumn as 'Project Assassin'. For their part, Ubisoft reps danced around the subject of whether or not the game would would be released on other consoles... until they finally confessed the game would come to the Xbox 360 and PC.

At first, many chalked up the confusion to the dissembling that is all too common in videogame-publisher public relations.
