EA Posts $25 Million Loss in Q4; Net Income Plummets for Year

Leading publisher Electronic Arts posted a wider loss for the fourth quarter and its net income fell to just a third of its prior level last year. EA attributed this to a transition period with the next-gen platforms. The company's annual revenue was up, however, and 15 games based on wholly owned EA IP is scheduled for release this year. [Update: Will Wright's Spore delayed]

What's working, what's not, and the way forward for US and Iraqi ...

Editor's note: The following is an edited version of a report on the author's April 2-29 trip to Iraq. West accompanied 12 Iraqi and American units in Anbar province and Baghdad. The full version can be viewed online at the Small Wars Journal blog, http://smallwarsjournal.com/blog/2007/05/iraq-trip-report-2-29-april-20/For the U.S. to achieve the goal of relative stability in Iraq, by the end of 2007 three battlefield conditions must be met. First, Iraq's predominantly Shiite army must demonstrate a strategy and a momentum against a resumption of Shiite ethnic cleansing in and around Baghdad. Second, in Anbar the Iraqi army and the predominantly Sunni police must sustain the momentum for eradicating al-Qaida in Iraq. Third, in the rest of the Sunni Triangle, the Iraqi Army must prevent al-Qaida from developing sanctuaries.

Windows Vista, Still A Bad Choice For Games

Windows Vista is marketed as the OS for future PC games. But, until then, Microsoft's latest Windows version is far from being at least the equal of the XP. At least that's what HardOCP discovered.

The site did a side-by side comparison with eight games to check stability and framerates in Windows XP and Windows Vista. The games list included Battlefield 2142, Company of Heroes, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Flight Simulator X, Need for Speed: Carbon, Prey, The Sims 2 and World of Warcraft. Unfortunately, the results were not Vista's favor:"For some titles, especially Company of Heroes and Need for Speed, we saw dramatic framerate discrepancies. While Need for Speed has not been patched since before the retail release of Vista, Relic has recently released a patch for Company of Heroes.

Hayward soldier's essays from Iraq remain candid

HAYWARD — The MySpace blog essays of Army Spc. Brandon Stewart always begin with an emoticon.

The round cartoon faces sport smiles, winks or smirks if the news is good. They are red and teeth-baring if the news is bad.

On Feb. 11, the emoticon was blue and frowning, with eyebrows sharply drawn. When she saw it the next morning, Stewart's mother, Esther Howard, expected unsettling words to follow.

"I don't want to be miserable anymore," the 21-year-old Hayward soldier wrote from Iraq. "The possibility of a life. Not an existence but a life is all I look forward to."

Whether the dispatches are hopeful or bleak, Stewart's online journal has at least provided a way for his family and friends to know how he was feeling. But everyone else in the world can read it, too.
