Bionicle Heroes Preview (Xbox 360)

In 1947, who knew that a toy called Self-Locking Building Bricks would eventually spawn a billion dollar franchise, including a remarkably successful video game series. Some may argue that the series success stemmed more from its Star Wars roots than its inclusion of LEGO pieces, but theres no denying that the block-built heroes are made all the more fun by the fact that youre watching a bunch of building blocks run around the screen. This time around Travelers Tales the same blokes behind the LEGO Star Wars games has decided to cook up their own, original storyline and characters. First, it should be known that this game is not directed at the older demographic. Rather, the aim of Bionicle Heroes (the name sorta gives it away, right?) is delivering a fun, colorful, third-person action/adventure game that is both accessible and dynamic.

Bionicle Heroes

And here I am, asserting the fact that Bionicle Heroes selects its players from the first moments spent in it. "That 10+ rating has a purpose, you know! What did you expect old man?"... "That plus is the key! And after all, Everyone means all breathing life, you ignorant!". The game is destined to a "green-minded" audience, no questions about it, but this doesn't mean that we can't find moments suitable for any of us, provided we start with the premise of a fun and seemingly intuitive experience. From this point of view, Bionicle Heroes successfully discharges its task.

Jazz band to seing away Friday night

Saxophonist Jeff Coffin, a member of the Grammy Award-winning jazz group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, will perform as guest artist with the Swingin' Axes, SFA's premier jazz band, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

“Having Jeff here to perform is a great opportunity for the audience and for our band members," said Dr. Gary Wurtz, SFA assistant professor of music and the Axes' director.

“Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is one of the biggest names in modern jazz ensembles. They are huge."

Since 1997, Coffin has traveled the world with the Flecktones, performing with musicians of all walks. Those with whom he has shared the stage and the recording studio include such diverse artists as The Dave Matthews Band, Garth Brooks, Van Morrison, the Wailers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Notable Shows

Two local outfits on tonight's bill—Loving Thunder and Weird Lords—recently rocked the first show ever held at ubiquitous Pine Street watering hole Cha Cha Lounge together, and if that performance was any indication, be advised: This one should not be missed. Weird Lords ruled with their bass-heavy, raucous set. Al Lenderink's skills on bass are complemented by Joe Arnone (Charming Snakes, Band of Horses) on keys, and if we're lucky, an encore appearance might be made by Bimbo's burrito slinger Mike Epting, whose blurred fingers and blistering riffs prompted Can't See drummer Thomas Wright to dub him a "secret guitar god." Two members of New Luck Toy complete the Weird Lords cast: Frontman/bassist Steve King stands well over 6 feet, looming large in front of Kelli Pain's kit; Pain's controlled, crazed drumming brings captivating energy to both projects.
