Xbox 360 Spring Update Improves VGA Image Quality

Although the new Windows Live Messenger integration and improved Achievements system are the more widely advertised new features of the Spring Update, a little known new feature has crept its way into the latest Dashboard version improved image quality when using the Xbox 360 VGA output. A long-standing complaint of the VGA output on the Xbox 360 is its washed out picture quality, where colors on the screen would not appear as bright and vibrant as compared to running the console to the TV using component cables. The culprit for this problem is the difference between how HDTV and PC displays interpret black levels. A correctly calibrated HDTV typically expects a black level to be at 7.5 IRE (with anything below that to be blacker than black), while a PC display has its black set to zero.

Chronicles of Riddick Getting Remade for PS3, Xbox 360

According to various sources online, developer Starbreeze has decided that for its first foray into the online world, they will start with something they are familiar with. So, instead of an all-new game, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will be getting a remake of the original Xbox (and eventually PC) game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

Acting as a sort of prequel to the movies Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, Escape from Butcher Bay is a first-person shooter that tasks players with helping the titular Riddick escape from a series of prisons, along the way developing his somewhat vague background hinted at in the films. However, unlike the films, the video game was actually well received.

For its return, Starbreeze is doing more than just giving players an overhaul in the graphics (which, at the time, were actually quite good), they will also be adding an online multiplayer mode and a chunk of new content to the single player campaign, namely a large portion that will reportedly take place on a ship called Dark Athena.

Xbox 360 Elite's beauty is mostly skin deep

Microsoft's latest gaming console offering is a study in the adage that beauty is only skin deep.

The Xbox 360 Elite ($479.99) is essentially an Xbox 360 painted black with chromed-out accents, a larger hard drive and a high-definition HDMI out port.

(MSNBC is a joint Microsoft - NBC Universal venture.)

The console's larger hard drive is a nice addition to Microsoft's console. The drive, a whopping 120 gigabytes bigger than the previous Xbox 360 and twice the size of the drive inside the PlayStation 3, is quickly becoming a requirement for anyone who makes use of the Xbox 360's video download service.

But Microsoft has already launched a replacement drive for those who wanted to level up their storage capacity it hit stores at the same time as the Elite 360, and cost $179.99.
