Free upgrade for PlayStation 3 enhances image quality of old games

TOKYO (AP) - A free download upgrade for the Sony PlayStation 3 enhances the image quality of movies and old video games and allows people to check out stored video, music files and digital photos through the Internet with the handheld PlayStation Portable. The upgrade, available for download worldwide Thursday, will improve the visual quality of PlayStation 2 games, as well as original PlayStation games, although it won't be quite as dazzling as the quality of PS3 games, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. officials said. The software will also work to adjust the image quality of movies so they will look much better on the PS3, which is equipped to deliver higher image quality through next-generation Blu-ray disc technology.Up to now, people could use the PlayStation Portable to watch content stored in their PS3 through a wireless local area network. With the upgrade, users will be able to use PlayStation Portables to check out music, photos and video stored in their PS3 machines at home, while on the go, even from abroad, wherever there's an Internet connection.

Game Dork: Tales from Joystick Land

You remember your first kiss and your first car. And if you're a hard-core, bleary-eyed video gamer with too many 5 a.m. killing sprees in your pocket, you remember the first time you played "Halo" until you couldn't feel your red, raw thumbs anymore.

It was happy, awesome fun times, a "Doom"-style shooter set in outer space. You fired rocket launchers at rivals while jumping 20 feet in the air to secure high ground. It was a real eye-opener to what glory was possible on the Xbox. Then came the improved "Halo 2."

Now the gaming world awaits the Sept. 25 release of "Halo 3." But if you're antsy, you can already download and play a short preview version through Xbox Live, though you have to own or rent "Crackdown" for the Xbox 360 to do so. ("Crackdown" itself is a stellar, "GTA" rip-off shooting game.)

There's not much "Halo 3" at your disposal through Xbox Live, but it's enough to discover that the beta, at least, plays and feels like "Halo 2 Continued" with upgrades of visuals and weapons.

PSP: Call of Duty: Roads to Victory Review

When bringing a popular console franchise to the handheld realm, one of the biggest challenges developers face is successfully translating the experience to more limited hardware. For most franchises, this means that some sacrifices must be made, and that’s especially true of a cinematic FPS franchise like Call of Duty. While developer Amaze Entertainment did do a decent job of miniaturizing the Call of Duty experience when it comes to graphics and controls, unfortunately the rest of the game feels rushed and unfinished.

Late Night Consoling

According to reports out of Nintendo Power, Bizarre Creations' well-loved top down shooter franchise Geometry Wars will be seeing entries on Wii and Nintendo DS as Geometry Wars: Galaxies. Apparently, Galaxies will veer away from the quick-play arcade roots of the original Xbox and Xbox 360 games, and will be "a full-fledged game with an extensive single-player campaign" as well as multiplayer modes. Unsurprisingly, Galaxies will feature some sort of motion control and stylus-based control on Wii and DS respectively. For gamers who prefer the old-school take, the original Geometry Wars and Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved will be included.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is being developed by Kuju Entertainment, the studio behind the Battalion Wars franchise on GameCube and Wii, as well as the multiplayer component of Arkane Studios' Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (PC).
