It started with a character named Sartaj Singh in author Vikram Chandra's 2007 short story collection, Love and Longing in Bombay. "It's hard to know why somebody stays with you," says Chandra. "I could make a lot of post-game guesses about what really happened, but the truth is that I just found myself walking around, still with this guy in my head. I would see things and find myself thinking about how his character might see those things himself." Following Sartaj Singh led to Chandra's latest novel Sacred Games, a 900-page literary thriller about cops, gangsters, Bollywood, politics, power, religion, violence, and betrayal in the criminal underworld of Bombay.
