Pentagon, State struggle to define nation building roles

For just $23.10, you can purchase a book from Amazon that will guide you through the invasion and occupation of a small country.

If countries such as Haiti, Liberia, or Sierra Leone, with about 5 million people and per capita incomes of approximately $500, were on your To Do list, The Beginner's Guide to Nation-Building estimates that you would need 65,000 international troops, at an annual cost of $13 billion.

In addition, you should plan for 8,000 international police officers ($1.25 billion) and lots of advisers to help establish the rule of law, provide humanitarian services, assist in governance, stabilize the economy, teach democratization, and support development and infrastructure work, for a total cost of some $15.6 billion a year.

Fear and Loathing in Bombay

The writing and conceptualization of Vikram Chandra's latest novel Sacred Games took him into the criminal underworld of Bombay where he discovered a story of epic proportions.

It started with a character named Sartaj Singh in author Vikram Chandra's 2007 short story collection, Love and Longing in Bombay.

"It's hard to know why somebody stays with you," says Chandra. "I could make a lot of post-game guesses about what really happened, but the truth is that I just found myself walking around, still with this guy in my head. I would see things and find myself thinking about how his character might see those things himself."

Following Sartaj Singh led to Chandra's latest novel Sacred Games, a 900-page literary thriller about cops, gangsters, Bollywood, politics, power, religion, violence, and betrayal in the criminal underworld of Bombay.

SOE Gamer Day 2007

Sony Online Entertainment hit the Big Apple to show off its upcoming games, a list that includes a mean God of War, a little kung fu and plenty of MMO shenanigans guaranteed to keep people glued to their PCs. On the downside, I can't discuss the most exciting announcement until June 11, simply because companies love to torture us (and you) with horrible embargoes. Just know that it's sweet, ambitious and perhaps one of the best reasons to purchase a certain video game console.Outside of this mystery game, God of War: Betrayal stands out as the most intriguing announcement. SOE, in conjunction with SCEA's Santa Monica Studio (the team behind the God of War series) will bring the bloody franchise to over 1200 cell phones this summer. The side-scrolling 2-D hack fest takes place between the first and second game, chronicling Kratos' exploits through ancient Greece.
