Helping the needy as a matter of faith

For eight years, an unusual group of people has regularly gathered for an unofficial breakfast meeting with Forest Grove school Superintendent Jack Musser to discuss issues related to families and youth.

The group, made up of local pastors, is unusual in that it represents both liberal and conservative churches.

In Washington County, many interdenominational groups are unofficially divided: Liberal Christians tend to end up doing things with other liberal Christians, while conservative Christians are likely to work with one another. The many Christians in the middle mix with either group.

But in the county, there are many opportunities for Christians with diverse views to come together. In the end, some say, broad-based interdenominational and even interfaith efforts can benefit not just the community but Christianity itself.

This story of the Christ lacks passion

And the year is ending with the first studio entry in the cycle: "The Nativity Story," directed by Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen"), written by Mick Rich ("The Rookie") and bankrolled by New Line Cinema (the company that gave us the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy).

Trade paper wags have dubbed it "The Passion of the Christ: The Prequel," but, as it turns out, the film borrows little from that hit, and more closely resembles the kind of docile, big-budget Hollywood Bible epics that followed the success of "The Robe" in the '50s.

The story opens with an action scene: Herod's campaign to wipe out the generation of male babies prophesied to produce a messiah. Then it flashes back a year to tell the story of the early courtship of Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac).

Slamdance Recognizes Guerilla Gamemakers

Slamdance, the independent film festival started in 1995 as an alternative to the commercialized Sundance Film Festival, is again shaking things up by adding video games to the mix. The Guerilla Gamemaker Competition will be held concurrently with the Slamdance Film Festival, taking place in Park City, Utah, January 18-27. "Video games today are as important and influential as movies have ever been, says Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter. The type and standard of creativity we are seeing at Slamdance Games is akin to the trail blazing days of independent filmmaking, a time that artists reacted with more imagination and against the generic fare of the movie studio." The Guerilla Gamemaker Competition is focused on on the art of game design and the creative professionals who bring entertainment experiences to gamers.

Pelura replaces Kane as state GOP chairman—

James Pelura is the new chairman of the Maryland Republican Party. He was elected today to replace John Kane, who didn't seek a second four-year term.

Pelura is a veterinarian from Davidsonville and a veteran campaign organizer for Republicans in Maryland.

State G-O-P executive director John Gibson also resigned today and will be replaced on an interim basis by Michael Harrison, who had been the party's political director.

John White, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Maryland's Third District, ran against Pelura for the chairmanship but was easily defeated.

Republicans fared poorly in this November's elections, but party spokeswoman Audra Miller says Kane oversaw the strongest state party in recent memory, pointing to his successful fund-raising and voter turnout efforts.
