Latest City of Heroes expansion now out

Today marks the release of NCSoft and Cryptic Studios' eighth free expansion for City of Heroes. Issue 8: To Protect and Serve brings new mission styles, new story content, and a veteran awards program to one of the most successful comic-book themed PC games ever. Issue 8 also reintroduces the newly-revitalized Faultline neighborhood as a brand new city zone now that the zombies and other evil beings that plagued it have been kicked out.

One of the new features in the expansion is the veteran awards program. This feature gives a wide-variety of veteran rewards for players who have had a City of Heroes or City of Villains account for at least three months. The rewards are given in increments of three months or active play and include special powers, base items, badges and costume pieces such as wings.

PC Review: Neverwinter Nights 2

Bards sing tales of heroes from ages past, but never have the Forgotten Realms so desperately needed a champion. Years have passed since the war between Luskan and Neverwinter, almost enough time for the wounds of war to heal. But the brief peace the Realms have known may be at an end. Tension growing between the mighty city-states means the Sword Coast again teeters on the edge of open war. Unnoticed, a greater danger stalks the City of Skilled Hands. Unbeknownst to the denizens of the North, deep in the Mere of Dead Men, dark forces from across the Realms have been rallied under the banner of a legendary evil. If left unchallenged, all of the North is doomed to fall under its power. Even in this darkest hour, hope remains. A mysterious relic is borne to Neverwinter in the hands of a lone hero so that its secrets may be unlocked - secrets that carry the fate of all the North.

Sharp distinction

Playing the ethnic stereotype is just not Lucy Lius style. She goes for roles with a sharp edge like a pregnant woman in her new AIDS drama, writes TAN DAWN WEI.

IN the independent AIDS drama 3 Needles, Lucy Liu has to look heavily pregnant, wear no make-up and speak impeccable Mandarin.

It is not like anything she is used to, but she fulfils all three requirements the last one, imperfectly but competently.

Her role as an ignorant AIDS-stricken black marketeer in rural China who collects blood for sale from peasants is the first time that she has delivered her lines entirely in Mandarin in any of her TV shows and movies.

Liu may be Chinese-American, but for anyone who has cared to track her career, the 38-year-old has not exactly been playing the ethnic card in Hollywood.

Rob McKenzie, National Post

Part of the power of Heroes lies in its plotting. Each episode is a chapter, and each chapter ends with a cliffhanger. And unlike Lost, the cliffhangers don't hang forever.

This evening, for example, after slowing down in the past couple of weeks to introduce two new mutants (Radioactive Man and Waitress Who Remembers Everything -- And Not Just to Hold the Mayo), Heroes zips forward with the heavily promoted climax of its "Save the cheerleader, save the world" storyline.

While the apocalyptic end-game certainly contributes to Heroes' status as television's most popular new show (No. 12 overall in BBM Nielsen's latest ratings for the Toronto area), what makes Heroes so special is that it's funny.

Granted, the apocalypse is no hotbed of humour. Mark Houlahan, an apocalypticist at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, points to the deriding of the whore of Babylon in the Book of Revelation as one of the rare instances in which the two overlap, and in that case it was as satire.

Friday, December 1

MANILA, Philippines (CNN) -- Red Cross officials in Manila listed 145 people as dead and 294 as missing after Typhoon Durian slammed into the Philippines Friday, triggering massive volcanic mudslides and flooding.

In addition, 179 people were wounded and officials said the death and wounded tolls were expected to climb as Red Cross teams plow through the wreckage and assess the damage, Gwendolyn Pang, executive assistant to the Red Cross director in Manila said Saturday.

The rescue teams were first sent out Friday by boat, but Pang said many of the areas were inaccessible.
