Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (PSP)

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is quite the milestone title in Japan, where it currently stands as the only PlayStation Portable title to shift over a million units. That may change when Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII ships later this year, but until then, it remains the biggest reason the PSP has been able to stay (somewhat) competitive in a country enraptured by the Nintendo DS.

What makes Monster Hunter so irresistible to portable gamers? It plays out like a combination of Phantasy Star Online and Pokemon, two of the most addictive and endlessly satisfying releases of the last decade. Though the original Monster Hunter Freedom failed to find a huge North American following, Capcom is giving it another shot this fall with the numbered sequel that packs a considerable amount of single-player content, as well as four-player Ad Hoc play and the prospect of downloadable content.

Square-Enix Party Boasts Previews, Trailers

They're partyin' in Tokyo! A day before the festivities began, we heard that Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) and Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP) would definitely make an appearance, and then we learned about even more games (The Last Remnant trailer debuted) during the pre-Party press event. But now, everything is in full swing, so lets get down to business.

First off, we must remind everyone that this Party is open to the public, and it has been estimated that nearly 40,000 gamers are on hand to have some Square-Enix-driven fun. They first piqued everyone's interest by treating attendees to a trailer for Dissidia, which featured Final Fantasy IX's Zidane going toe-to-toe with Final Fantasy VII super-villain, Sephiroth. They didn't show much of the environment or locations, though, and there is no Japanese or U.S.

Details on Square-Enix Party

So now that the Square-Enix Party is over with, what was it that they announced? A lot of rumors surrounding Sony and Square-Enix can actually be laid to rest with the wrap-up of this party, as Square-Enix's announcements seem to have been largely focused around the PlayStation brand. On Saturday we mentioned just a some of the tidbits to come from the party, but here's the official breakdown:

Final Fantasy XIII was shown off behind closed doors during the event, and while details on the game still remain scarce, it looks like Square-Enix will not be releasing the game on any console besides the PlayStation 3. All we know about FFXIII is that it's been in development way before FFXII was even completed.

Final Fantasy versus XIII was also shown off, and it too will remain a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Feature: Final Fantasy Dissidia interview translation

Final Fantasy: Dissidia may be a new name to most of us, but to a select group this game has been on their minds for quite a while. In Famitsu's latest issue for June 1st, the producer (Yoshinori Kitase), director (Yousuke Shiokawa), and character designer (Tetsuya Nomura) of Final Fantasy: Dissidia speak with Famitsu about this action game diversion into the Final Fantasy franchise. Famitsu: What are you aiming for with the production and positioning of this game? Nomura: We're commemorating Final Fantasy's 20th anniversary. It's a kind of celebration of Final Fantasy with a title that's particularly made for this event. With Shiokawa, who was the planner on Kingdom Hearts I and II, we've created a very young staff with a desire to try something new. Kitase: While keeping the parts of Final Fantasy that should remain the same, and fusing that with Shiokawa's sharpened sensitivity, I think we'll be able to create something quite fun.
