New Online PS3 Content Available

Sony may not be offering downloadable content for the PS3 at the Playstation Store on a regular basis like the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii, but every once in a while they drop a few things off for gamers to pick up. Today, a variety of content has become available including original arcade games, trailers and the PSOne games that were previously promised with the 1.70 firmware update Gamers will now find a free demo and the full game ($6.99) of the much talked about Super Rub a Dub title at previous Sony press conferences. These cute little ducks have mostly been used as tech demonstrations for not only the PS3 but the PS2 as well. Now they have their very own game where you navigate ducks in tubs filled with water using the motion sensing capabilities of the SixAxis controller. The second Midway arcade classic from Sony Online Entertainment, Gauntlet II is also available.

Eidos targets casual gamers with cheap Wii games

Four key factors form SoGoPlay's mission statement; compelling gameplay, immediate playability, mass market appeal and an affordable price. The first crop of titles from the SoGoPlay stable includes SPY-Q and Nervous Brickdown for DS and Merry-Go-Round Dreams for PC download. There will also be a number of PS2 and Wii titles ready for the autumn. "Sales of casual games both online and at retail have exploded in recent months and we intend to harness the existing growth potential in the US as well as position ourselves ready for the anticipated boom to come in Europe," said Lou Fawcett, head of casual games at Eidos. "But it's not just PC games that we're focusing on, it's also console and mobile games that have a broad appeal. We're aiming to establish SoGoPlay as the flagship casual games brand."

Singing up a storm

Screen Play has some bad news for SingStar fans today. There will be no way to "unlock" tracks you already own from the PS2 games via PS3's spiffy new SingStore.

The lovely Paulina Bozek, SingStar Game Director, promptly replied to Screen Play's request for a brief chat for a (still upcoming) game music feature, but broke my heart with her response to a question about whether Sony's boffins had come up with any solution to let PS3 users access their favourite tracks without buying them again or loading up the old game.

"It's very tough to know what songs a person owns and be able to ensure that they aren't passing the disc around to their friends and all downloading the songs for free," said Ms Bozek. "But of course you can still enjoy your PS2 SingStar discs on your PS3."

Bummer.
