Patience, patience -- PlayStation 3 can wait

Sony PlayStation 3: Launch date: Today. Hard drive size: 20 gigabytes or 60 gigabytes. Disc drive: Blu-ray/DVD/CD (read only). Price: $499 or $599. (Launch games include: Resistance: Fall of Man, F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7, NBA 2K7, Madden NFL 07.)
It's amazing how shabby your living room suddenly looks after you take the latest PlayStation console out of the box. The PlayStation 3 is all sleek lines and chrome accents, like a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Porsche 911 had a wild weekend of sex -- ending up with an 11-pound, 20-gigabyte love child.

Life would be so much better if we could all just live in our PS3. And if you're dead set on getting one this holiday season, that might be the only housing option you have left.

'F.E.A.R' is a scary game

Fear is not just a name for this game. It is an emotion that you will be feeling strongly and often when you play "F.E.A.R." for the Xbox 360.

The story follows a secret military squad that investigates the paranormal. You are a new recruit with skills so keen time seems to slow when you are in combat, and your first assignment may well be your last.

A homicidal maniac named Paxton Fettel has escaped from a secret facility, and is leading an army of cloned super soldiers to take down Armacham, the company responsible for his creation. While Fettel is a creepy guy, the person responsible for the biggest frights in the game is Alma, a little girl who has some connection to Fettel, Armacham and your character. One second you are walking down an empty hallway, the next Alma is walking towards you followed by plumes of fire.

FEAR Extraction Point Review

You've gotta love a game that encourages you to run up on any enemy with guns blazing in slow motion, all the while cackling like a madman. In that way, the expansion pack for Monolith's FPS masterpiece F.E.A.R. gets it right. In another key way, and here I'm referring to story and plot, it doesn't. Timegate, the developers for F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, actually got it W.R.O.N.G. There basically isn't any story or plot. Your nameless character is left to attempt an escape from the clone-trooper-ridden city of Auburn with the two characters from the original game, the demolitions expert Holladay and the medical expert Jin.I know what F.E.A.R. veterans are thinking: Wait a sec, how can the city be clone-ridden if the dude controlling them was taken out by the player's character in the original game? That's because for some bizarro-world reason, Paxton Fettel is back.

F.E.A.R. ( Review )

Yes, Bullet Time is back. Stop yawning at the back. Yes, if you wanted the laziest approximation possible, it's an FPS with slow-mo, but it's so much more than that. As Tom succinctly noted in his 9/10 PC review over a year ago, "F.E.A.R. isn't a game of specific set-pieces, it's a game about making your own". Ok, it's perhaps too much of a backhanded compliment for Vivendi to stick it on the box, but it completely nails the fact that Monolith's paranormal shooter is very much a game that doesn't prescribe the fun the way that other shooters do, and that the fun you make is of the very highest calibre.

But it's also the archetypal game of two halves, and one that has been the subject of intense debate over whether it deserves to be spoken of in the same breath as the true greats of the genre.

Tech Toys 2006, Part 3: Digital Photos and Video

Many feel that digital technologies tend to isolate people from the world around them, but that's decidedly not true of digital photography and video, which are most often used to store our most precious personal memories. In this part of our annual holiday shopping guide, I examine the products that can help you and your loved ones get the most from these highly personal technologies.

Digital Photography
In 2006, digital photography came into its own, dominating all facets of the photography market, from low-end point-and-click cameras to the high-end SLR models that professionals favor. Finally, we're standing on the edge of an era in which film will be considered a distant memory.

Digital Cameras
When you're seeking a digital camera, it's important to consider a few technical specifications, but overall quality is often based less on specs and more on personal experience, so be sure to shop around.

Invasion of war themes with FPS; 'Gears of War' wins

IF VIDEO GAMES were music, then the first-person shooter (FPS) would be its rock'n' roll. In the past decade, no other genre has been so explored, co-opted and exploited by developers. The form has mutated and turned into everything from gritty crime dramas to mech-based games to fantasy stealth titles.

And like rock, it's a genre that's distinctly American with its penchant for twitchy game play, large guns and even bigger explosions.

Looking at its history, the FPS has come a long way from its PC roots of "Wolfenstein 3D." Since then, the genre has covered monsters, Nazis, hell, the postal service, zombies and both Aliens and Predators.

As the form has evolved, it has made the jump from mouse and keyboard to console control pads, and no other system has bridged that gap between the two markets more than Microsoft's Xbox 360.
