Sony's official list is online and searchable.

November 20, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment has created an official backwards compatibility checklist site for looking up the compatibility status on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles. Rather than printing a flat list of 8,000 or so titles, Sony has created a search engine that allows you to look up any PSone or PS2 game and it'll tell you if it has any problems and what they are.

For instance, when searching for ICO you'll find that "Throughout gameplay and FMA's, the screen flickers." And when looking up Final Fantasy XI you'll find that "Users are unable to play titles that require HDD for PlayStation 2. This condition is planned to be resolved in the future with a system software update for PS3."

The site is located right here.

Final Fantasy XI Gets New Collection

Hard on the heels of recent releases Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy V Advance, Square-Enix has managed to put another title on store shelves this month: Final Fantasy XI Vana'diel Collection 2007. Much like the original Vana'diel collection released last year, this brand new package comes with everything gamers need to get started in the expansive world of Final Fantasy XI. The set includes the award-winning Final Fantasy XI in addition to all three follow-up expansions, Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, and the recent Treasures of Aht Urhgan, along with a new foldout Quick Manual including a world map and a starter's guide.

Originally released in 2003 in the US (2002 in Japan), Final Fantasy XI is Square-Enix's first foray into the world of MMORPGs. Four years later, the game currently boasts over 500,000 active subscribers with more than 1.7 million player characters from around the world.

No Final Fantasy XI on November 13

PlayOnline reports today that they are to undergo server maintenance and among those that will be affected is MMO Final Fantasy XI. We all know that updates like this is normal for all sites however, we can't help but wonder if this has anything to do with the recent rampant account hacks or the newly created task force.

As the servers go down, FF XI Linkshell Community Beta version will also be affected, as well as the following site realms: Friend List Plus, Q&A Search, Contact Us Form and the FF XI Community Sites (Viewing and Editing). The maintenance will be conducted on November 13, starting at 9 a.m. PST until 5 p.m. PST. Unfortunately for those players who want to recover some deleted characters, the PlayOnline Information Center will not be available likewise during the said hours.

Final Fantasy XI community sites: Help for the new adventurers

If you've just set foot in the world of Vana'diel, chances are you explore the lands aimlessly, overwhelmed by the grandiosity of Final Fantasy XI Online. Then you realize that you need help. The manuals and FAQs may be of little help at the start, so you try to interact with other players only to be more confused than when you first started off. That's where community sites come into the picture.

The official Final Fantasy XI website has listed six community sites that will help you get started with your adventure, whether you're a clueless newb or a veteran.

Beginners might find 1UP's Final Fantasy XI Traveler's Guide to be a good start off point to get acquainted with races and jobs. If you're out to destroy your enemies, you'd find the Vana'diel Bestiary site useful as it provides comprehensive info about monsters and foes.

A Christmas that croons and pops

Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Being a consumer is supposed to be easy. You visit a store, find what you want and then pay for it -- this is what modern society is built upon, or so it seems come December. But shoppers looking for Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3 may end up being disappointed this holiday season. There may not be enough of these hot video-game consoles to go around, so it's best to keep expectations down -- and to resist the temptation to pay a cent more than the sticker price (that's $280 for the Wii, $660 for the PS3 and $500 for the 360). Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been pleasing the hard-core crowd, and it has a been a good 12 months for games for the older systems, especially the PlayStation 2. Guitar Hero II, Okami and Final Fantasy XII will be much more than consolation prizes for PS2 owners, and the charming LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is a good all-ages bet for most game machines, especially the 360.

Final Fantasy XI Vana'diel Collection 2007

Square Enix, Inc. announced that the Final Fantasy XI Vana'diel Collection 2007, created exclusively for Windows, has shipped to retailers across the nation. The collection contains Final Fantasy XI, Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia and Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion packs, and a new foldout Quick Manual including a world map and a starter's guide, all in one convenient budget-priced package.

In Final Fantasy XI, players embark on numerous adventures through vast environments in Vana'diel, a persistent world with over a hundred areas to explore, including mountains, forests, glaciers, deserts, oceans, rivers, castles and dungeons. Final Fantasy XI lets players create an alter ego to traverse the world of Vana'diel and gives players the opportunity to form parties with others or play at their own pace. The expansion packs Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia and Treasures of Aht Urhgan are included, adding new jobs, areas, monsters, items and quests while continuing the storyline in new ways.

Final Fantasy XII Review

The Final Fantasy series is almost twenty years old. When Square developed the first title in the series, the game's name was meant to coincide with designer Hironobu Sakaguchi's retirement. Instead, the game's popularity set the stage for a series that has now reached twelve 'main' titles and more than half a dozen offshoots. Almost everything about the series has changed over the years, except for popularity and a generally high level of quality. Final Fantasy XII has changed almost everything from the series norm, except the quality. The result is a game that very well may be considered the best Japanese RPG in years. It's a smarter, more adult, and absolutely beautiful title; the perfect balm for anyone not taken with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion . Read on for my impressions of the newest and most ambitious chapter of the Fantasy that's never quite Final.

Gamezone: The latest tips, trends, and reviews

The wait has been worth it. Though Square-Enix has continued to put out a number of games under the "Final Fantasy" brand, "XII" is the first official entry in the franchise since "XI" several years ago. "XII" is an ambitious, epic, gorgeous looking game with a sophisticated and engaging story line set in a fantasy world and well over 60 hours of gameplay. What more could a gamer ask for?

The game begins two years after the fall of a country called Dalmasca by a military force called the Archadian Empire. The main hero of the tale is a young man named Vaan. He blames the death of his brother on the empire and has vowed a vendetta of sorts. He is soon joined by a ragtag group including the captain of a pirate sky ship named Balthier and his first mate, the rabbit-eared Fran. The group seemingly has only one thing in common: the fall of the empire and restoration of the Dalmasca royal family.

Final Fantasy V Advance ( Review )

Final Fantasy V is the lost SNES title in the series. Unless you bought the original Japanese cart and a handwritten translation, or tracked down the rare PSone release (with debilitating loading times) in Final Fantasy Anthology, then this is your first chance to play it legally. Released at a time when odd numbered Final Fantasy games emphasised the battle system and even numbered titles focussed on the story, you'll immediately notice the paucity of dialogue here.
