Xbox 360 - Microsoft "plays" with Halo 3

Do you remember the numerous viral websites Microsoft opened just before the Xbox 360 launch in order to raise the hype of its next-generation console? Good. However, what you don't know is that Microsoft seems to take a liking to such things and uses every kind of media to give hints that very few people will be able to catch.

Fortunately for us, Joystiq.com is among them and has spread its discovery: during the TV Advertising titled Cops & Robbers 2 cars appears in the video and their license plates are the clues we are talking about. The first license plate (00:18 of the video) says "GOW - 1106" which can be read as Gears of War will be released on November 2006 (and that's true!); on the other hand, the second one (00:50 of the video) says "HA LO0307".

Will it mean "Halo will be released on March 2007" or "Halo 3 will be released on 2007"? We leave you with this uncertainty and with the advertising video and two screenshots of the car license plates.

Gears of War takes top spot in Xbox Live chart

Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry Hryb, has revealed that Gears of War has finally overtaken Halo 2 to become the most popular game on Microsoft's multiplayer service.

Even with Call of Duty 2 and titles like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter attracting huge crowds in the Xbox 360's early months on sale, Halo 2 has always managed to maintain its position on the top of the pile - and its ousting in favour of a new, 360-exclusive property is likely to be seen as significant.

Elsewhere in the most-played charts, Call of Duty 3 overtook its predecessor to slot in behind Gears of War. Contra is the third most-played 360 game amongst connected users, despite the release of Midway's Defender last Wednesday.

A peek at this week's new games

Microsoft released a game called Gears of War-- it's a big sci-fi action game for the Xbox 360 that the company is hoping will be another Halo-style hit. Sorry, I haven't gotten a look at the finished version of it, but the early reviews seem to be raves.

I keep thinking that I don't like the songs in the new version of Guitar Hero II as much as I liked the songs in the original -- but then I keep playing the darn thing, so maybe I'm a big ol' hypocrite. So far, on the game's "hard" level, I've burned through 32 out of 40 songs and am stuck at a level called "Furious Fretwork" (specifically, I'm stuck on Psychobilly Freakout, made famous by Reverend Horton Heat). On the even-harder "expert" level, I'm stuck at Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy.

Aside from those way-anticipated games, it's been an eclectic week for games in the Post mailroom.

beter verkocht dan Wii en PS3

Retailers and analysts across North America confirm that the hottest selling gaming console this past weekend was the Xbox 360. In Canada Microsoft Game Studios was offering a three game deal with a system with a 20GB hard drive and an extra controller at one retailer for $449.99. One of the free games was Gears of War and when that sold out gamers could get the new Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Xbox Live Arcade: Unplugged.

Awesome Gears of War 360 Case Mod

Thing I hate about cool mods? They crap on my Plain Jane console. An individual over at the Xbox-Scene Forums has crafted this slick as hell Gears of War Xbox 360.

*Round of Applause* Thanks for making my 360 look boring as hell. Mine, and pretty much everyone else's. Well, except for the dude with that Half-Life 2 case. more @ source.

23:17 Japanese Blue Dragon bundle pics (0)

Microsoft is relaying on Gears of War to push 360s from the shelves in the US but the Japanese generally aren't interested in shooters with bulky space marines. So to conquer the hearts of the Japanese Microsoft is going use Blue Dragon as their killer app. Needless to say there's a Blue Dragon bundle coming and Game Watch have the first pics of this bundle.

Microsoft spends £500,000 on Metro ads

Metro, a leading free newspaper in the UK, just told GamesIndustry.biz that it has sold half a million pounds worth of advertising to Microsoft to promote the Xbox 360 this holiday season. Today's paper is dominated by the Xbox 360, with huge adverts for the likes of Gears of War, Viva Pinata and Ninety-Nine Nights. There's also a bunch of competitions to win Xbox 360 goodies. There are also large adverts from UK retailers promoting the Xbox 360, with several third party titles heavily hyped. "One of the reasons they've done it is to cause a reaction," said Metro ads exec Chris Brown. "It costs 500,000 to do a whole issue, but they'll make a profit out of that. Our readership is 2 million people every day, so if 100,000 of those people make a 50 purchase, that's 5 million. "So you might think it's a lot of money, but think of the money they'll make off the back of it."
