Tilley finds fantasy love Walking the walk, talking the talk of gods

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- People fall in love with film characters, TV characters, even book characters that exist only in their imaginations. So would it be hopelessly, impossibly dorky to fall in love with a video game character?

Yeah, you're right, it would. Still, you cannot deny the jaw-dropping hotness that is Nariko, the virtual vixen protagonist of Heavenly Sword, one of the PlayStation 3's most buzzed-about upcoming games. (It was even featured in an episode of NBC's Heroes.)

Due for release this fall, the game has been dubbed "Goddess Of War" because of its surface similarity to the blockbuster God of War games on the PS2 -- or maybe because Nariko is a goddess, full stop. But our hands-on time with Heavenly Sword at Sony Gamer's Day in San Diego this week indicates that Nariko has some interesting twists up her sleeve.

In brief: this week's new game announcements

Each week, GamesIndustry.biz brings you a round-up of all the games announced over the last five days, plus a guide to what's arriving at retail this weekend.

It's been a busy week for Sony, with the company's Gamers Day in the US revealing a batch of new titles for its lead formats.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is a new PS3 title from Naughty Dog, designed to be the first in a fast-paced adventure franchise from the Jak & Daxter developers.

Also revealed for the PS3 was SOCOM: Confrontation, the latest title in Sony's tactical war sim developed by Slant Six Games and due in November.

Devil May Cry creator Yoshiki Okamoto is contributing Folklore to the PS3, a single player fantasy adventure under development at Game Republic.

The PSP will see Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow later this year, along with Bigbig Studios racing sequel Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Get your licks in with 'Guitar Hero II'

If you bought Red Octane's "Guitar Hero II" for the PlayStation 2 last fall, you know it's an insanely fun game for air guitarist wannabes. Strap on the plastic guitar, then with the fingers on your left hand, hold down a colored button. When that color comes at you on the TV screen, flick the strum bar with your right hand. Time it right, and you unleash a string of guitar notes, as if you were playing "Cherry Pie," "Message in a Bottle" or other rock hits.

"Guitar Hero II" is perfect for people who aren't hard-core gamers. It's easy to learn, hard to master and involves more than zoning out with a controller in your hands. You thrash around and bang your head, taking you to your own private concert arena.

Well, Xbox 360 owners can join in the fun, too, with their own version.

Too many games.

A couple of months ago, my brother and I discussed my video game collection. Spread across numerous consoles, it probably sits at 500 plus games, a ridiculous number, considering all the money I spent over the years to acquire it. Even worse is the fact that I only play (in my free time) five games at most these days. Most of the games in my collection collect dust, doomed to waste away on DVD racks until I croak and my future children throw them away (because PS2 and Xbox 360 will be ancient in the year 4354...when I die). Many of them remain in my apartment because of one special quality, something that caught my eye. Def Jam Icon, for example, is still with me because I love the cut scenes, not necessarily the fighting. War of the Monsters? I like destroying buildings. Pokemon Channel? Because I always wanted my own Pikachu.
