Wii VC Nets Two More Genesis Classics

Sega announced today that two more Sega Genesis classics, Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin, are now available for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console. Each title retails for 800 Wii Points ($8).

In Golden Axe, players choose either a powerful warrior, an amazon, or a tough-nosed dwarf and fight it out with the evil Death Adder's forces. Players can attack with weapons and magic, and also use mounts.

Ecco the Dolphin takes a more leisurely approach, allowing players to explore the ocean while trying to find his missing friends. Sonar can be used to gain valuable information from other creatures, although as a dolphin players must remember to surface for air to survive. Ecco also features one of the best soundtracks of the 16-bit era.

These new titles join previously released Genesis titles Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast, giving the system one of the best Virtual Console lineups thus far on the Wii.

Wii and Virtual Console Go Retro

In the wake of recent reports that the Wii-mote is injuring people and smashing their living room possessions, news that Nintendo is releasing more titles for its Virtual Console (which doesn't use the motion sensor controller) is both welcome and calming.

Nintendo's Virtual Console is a big draw for older gamers. That's because the scheduled lineup of games includes hits from Nintendo's previous systems, including the NES, SNES, and N64. However, the one-time bitter competition has also been thrown in, including games from the days of Turbo Grafx 16 and even Sega Genesis. Clearly, Virtual Console is Nintendo's answer to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, which features some equally impressive hits from yesteryear (including Street Fighter II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and DOOM).
