Awesome Half-Life 2 360 Case Mod

While most of the case mods I've seen should have remained a thought in the maker's head, this one is actually quite impressive. Pin Point over on the QJ forums is the mad genius behind this creation. The Xbox 360 mod has a massive window cut in the top, and a further window and decal added to the DVD drive. There's an awesome layered logo on the bottom, and the console is designed to be stood up, with a fantastic paint job. It's a slick finish and the whole thing works really well, with some nice geometric shapes giving it a unique appeal

Nicely done, Pin Point! Make the jump for the another view. Flynn De Marco Half-Life 2 Xbox 360 mod.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl ( First Impressions )

While being in any zone at all may be something new to most of the inhabitants of THQ's happy-happy-fun-bus, for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl developer GSC Game World the feeling's all too familiar. Estimates vary on how long the FPS has been in production, but "five years" is a safe bet. Heavily delayed – an original release date of 2004 sailed past with barely a whimper – many had thought the project lost until it reared its head at Games Convention in August. THQ has faith. Shipping 80 journalists to Ukraine from literally all over the world is no laughing matter. But the questions are obvious: can the game Eurogamer editor Kristan Reed described as "staggeringly beautiful" in April 2004 really cut it in a post-Half-Life 2 world? Hasn't S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s time been and gone?

The answers aren't as easily available.

Half-Life 2 Deathmatch surprise

In a surprise move, Valve Software released a 32mb Half-Life 2 deathmatch download over Steam yesterday, in tandem with their release of the Source engine SDK. Two maps are included, based on portions of the singleplayer game, and allow you to knock fellow deathmatchers left, right and centre using the gravity gun. The game is actually a stand-alone game, separate from the full product, and includes its own bespoke server browser and the like.

Character models available include the Combine and resistance fighter options, and pistols, SMGs and grenades are also an option in addition to the hilarious possibilities of the gravity gun. A Deathmatch Map Making Contest was revealed by Valve at the same time as the download, and a top prize of $5000 is up for grabs with two runners-up prizes of $3000 going.

Valve pushes Half Life 2: Episode 2 into Summer of 2007

We've all been complaining about the sheer number of games and systems coming out before the holidays, and of course no one is going to have the time or the budget to hit them all. So...erm...I have some good news, and I have some bad news. The good news: we can say that one is going to be pushed further back into 2007, and the bad news is that it's Half Life 2: Episode 2.

Valve's Doug Lombardi told CVG today that Half-Life 2: Episode Two's release has slipped from Q1 2007 back to summer 2007. Lombardi told us that the super developer is "now targeting summer 2007" for a release. This obviously affects Team Fortress 2 and Portal, which all form part of mouth-watering Episode Two package.

It started with a release date around the end of this year, then we were told to expect it at the beginning of 2007, and now we're being told summer.

Valve delays Half Life 2: Episode One

Disappointing many, the long-awaited expansion to Half Life 2 is being yet again delayed. For reasons unknown, Valve has stated that the game won't be released for many more months, extending into summer of next year: Valve's Doug Lombardi told CVG today that Half-Life 2: Episode Two's release has slipped from Q1 2007 back to summer 2007. Lombardi told us that the super developer is "now targeting summer 2007" for a release. This obviously affects Team Fortress 2 and Portal, which all form part of mouth-watering Episode Two package. Many were looking forward to the release, which was originally supposed to be here this year. However, given the double edged sword that is quick yet bug-ridden releases, it's often better to have a delay for quality improvements than a game pushed forward when it doesn't need to be.

74-year-old gets 109 years

Odds are Keith Landers, 74, could live another 25 years at most, but he was sentenced Friday to serve 109 years in prison for murdering his wife and trying to kill her friend.

The sentence was symbolic, a message to the community that murder won't be tolerated, said Superior Court Judge Philip Volland.

In July, a jury found that Landers intentionally shot and killed Evangeline Landers, his wife of 27 years, and nearly killed Joerene Hout, a family friend. The Landers, who lived in Eagle River, were in the middle of a bitter divorce.

The issue at Friday's court hearing was whether a man of Landers' age should be sentenced to serve more years than he could live.

"There is a need for a sentence to speak to deter others," Volland said. Age is no excuse.

Polonium, the poison of choice

Polonium-210 has been in the spotlight since it was identified as the poison that killed Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer in Russia's internal security service. Karl K Turekian, professor of geology and geophysics at Yale University, explains its basic qualities, where and why it is produced, and how it destroys human tissue.

In an interview with National Interest Online editor Ximena Ortiz, Turekian also says the decision to look for polonium as a source

of the poisoning required a high degree of sophistication and possibly some prior knowledge.

NIO: Could you explain what polonium is?

KKT: First of all, the basic chemistry of polonium: it's everywhere naturally. Polonium-210 occurs in anything that has uranium, but the levels are very, very low.

The Importance of Game Length

Gamasutra's regular 'Question of the Week' feature touches, this week, on the ideal length of games, and the importance of game length. While the overwhelming opinion was 'quality is better than quantity', there were a range of opinions along that scale. From the article: "I would say as a gamer on the more casual side (30+ years) the game length is fine around 20-25 hours. If you are having fun while playing. I never have time to finish anything longer. It makes me more satisfied to have played through the game in 20-25 game hours than never even reach half way. - Joachim Carlsson, Massive Entertainment" .

In Mayfair, The Long Half-Life Of Notoriety

LONDON, Dec. 1 -- A chauffeur-driven gold Rolls-Royce rolled past the jam-packed Cipriani restaurant, where the menu lists a Russian caviar appetizer for just under $500. A few doors down at an Elizabeth Arden spa, the Peaceful Pampering Package costs about $530 for a clientele of coiffed women arriving in Jaguars for stress relief. It was just another weekday lunchtime in Mayfair -- except for all of the police in the neighborhood looking for radiation, and that nasty business about the dead Russian spy.

"We are a bit shocked," said Lycra-clad Leslie Driscoll, 58, stretching for her lunchtime jog next to a black Bentley. "We're not used to this kind of intrigue."

Warhammer devs answer slashdot questions

Team Warhammer Online was nice enough to answer several questions from Slashdot readers. Since we think that you guys aren't really interested with the questions that people had to ask, we just cut the fat and stuck to the meat. Here be the pertinent details surrounding WAR from the answers given by the Warhammer devs. Enjoy folks!

CRAFTING - Sorry but for now they can't release any details on crafting mechanics. Wait six-months.

PORTS - They didn't do a straight tabletop port because they decided to treat Warhammer like Batman. You all know how many flavors Batman comes in: from oddly jolly Adam West to amusingly hoarse Christian Bale. This is the MMO version of the world the tabletop strategy war game.

GRINDING - What they did to help get rid of grinding is to allow players to level not only via PvE but also through what they call Realm vs Realm game-play.
