'Halo 3' preview is fair game before Sept. 25

You remember your first kiss and your first car. And if you're a hard-core, bleary-eyed video gamer with too many 5 a.m. killing sprees in your pocket, you remember the first time you played "Halo" until you couldn't feel your red, raw thumbs anymore.

It was super happy awesome fun times, a "Doom"-style shooter set in outer space. You fired rocket launchers at rivals while you jumped 20 feet in the air to secure high ground. It was a real eye-opener to what glory was possible on the Xbox. Then came the improved "Halo 2."

Halo 2 for PC Delayed by 'Partial Nudity'

While Xbox 360 owners bask in the blissful glow of the Halo 3 beta, PC gamers are still stuck waiting for the Games for Windows port of Halo 2. Initially slated to ship out on May 8, the game was pushed back two weeks to address installation errors and other unspecified issues. Yesterday, Microsoft confirmed that the game would be pushed back again, this time until May 31st.

Surprisingly, the latest delay comes after the revelation of hidden nudity within the game code. Amusing to us, but assuredly frightening for Microsoft and Bungie in a post-"Hot Coffee" world. A Microsoft spokesperson had this to say: "It has come to our attention that an unfortunate, obscure content error which includes partial nudity was included in our initial production of Halo 2 for Windows Vista. As such, we have updated the initial game packaging at retailers with a label, so customers are aware before purchasing the game.

Difficulty: Medium Learning Curve: About a half hour

Halo 2 was released on the Xbox back in 2004, and as you're probably aware of by now, it was a huge success. The first-person shooter added online multiplayer to the proceedings, and despite a universally reviled cliff-hanger ending, it was really something special on the Xbox. Three years later, it's now available as one of the first Vista-only PC games. It's still easy to see why this game was so loved on consoles in its day, but when you put it in direct comparison with recent PC shooters, it loses a ton of its appeal, making it best suited for Halo fans who want a good way to play or make custom maps.

Pros
Good multiplayer varietyIncluded map editor lets players make their own battlegroundsDecent single-player campaign
Cons
Gamepad users get potentially unfair advantage in multiplayer with auto-aimGraphics are unimpressive by today's standardsPoor single-player storyline with unsatisfying cliff-hanger endingArbitrary differences between silver and gold users

Space Shoot: Online gamers get a taste of 'Halo 3'

You remember your first kiss and your first car. And if you're a hardcore, bleary eyed video gamer with too many 5 a.m. killing sprees in your pocket, you remember the first time you played Hal" until you couldn't feel your red, raw thumbs anymore.

It was super happy awesome fun times, a Doom-style shooter set in outer space. You fired rocket launchers at rivals while you jumped 20 feet in the air to secure high ground. It was a real eye-opener to what glory was possible on the Xbox. Then came the improved Halo 2.

Now the gaming world awaits the Sept. 25 release of Halo 3. But if you're antsy, you can already download and play a short preview version through Xbox Live, though you have to own or rent Crackdown for the Xbox 360 to do so. (Crackdown itself is a stellar, GTA-ripoff shooting game.)

There's not much Halo 3 at your disposal through Xbox Live, but it's enough to discover the beta, at least, plays and feels like Halo 2 Continued with upgrades of visuals and weapons.

Master chief back in action

On May 16, a very small portion of the world's population went into recluse. These chosen few, who purchased Crackdown for the Xbox 360, were finally able to activate the Halo 3 beta. The rest of the world will have to wait until September to play the game. Excalibur was fortunate enough to test the beta a few days before its release.Though this is its debut on the Xbox 360, Halo 3 looks similar to its predecessors. Guns, structures and Spartans have seen little change, while the environment and details of the maps are enhanced. The look is naturally superior to Halo 2, but not the best the 360 has to offer (keep in mind it is still a beta version).Although the cosmetic differences are slight, the controls feel brand new. The controller's shoulder buttons now serve as reload and action buttons.

Halo 2 Vista Delayed Due to Nude Content

For those of you who have been waiting for the PC version of Halo 2, looks like you will have to wait a little longer – that is, if you're able to tear yourself away from the Xbox 360 Halo 3 beta. Microsoft has once again pushed back the release date for the Windows Vista edition of Halo 2 to May 31. Halo 2 Vista was originally set for release on May 8, but Microsoft decided to push it back in order to make some important improvements to the install experience and to touch upon other technical issues. "Halo 2 for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced, and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31," a Microsoft representative said. "Shadowrun will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows Live system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers."

Interestingly enough, reports are now surfacing that nudity is the cause for Halo 2 PC release.

Microsoft Betas Halo 3 for Xbox 360

Preparations are proceeding for release of Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, with Microsoft hosting events last week to give game reviewers an opportunity to preview a beta version of Halo 3. Although Shane Kim of Microsoft Game Studios predicts that Halo 3 will be even bigger than Halo 2, reviewers see more work needed, based on the beta version they previewed.
