Luke Smith: Halo Is My Mario

Over at 1Up, their intense Halo 3 coverage is getting underway. Luke Smith gets the ball rolling declaring his undying affection for things Master Chief:

I like the Metal Gear games, I think Zelda games are consistently excellent, but there's something about Halo (for me) that's just different. Maybe it was the first shooter I played that had some substance? Maybe it was that my best friend bought me a copy of the game for my birthday and I didn't even have the console yet. Maybe it was all of the traveling to play in Halo tournaments on weekends in college, but somewhere between Halo: Combat Evolved's release and now, Halo became my Mario. It is the game that made me care about video games like I did when I was 10.

And this is coming from a dude who pretty much hates everything! Brian Ashcraft

12:01 BIG surprises planned for Halo's 5th birthday (2)

The 15th of November marks the 5th birthday of Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox and while we've had a solid amount of Halo 3 news over the past couple of weeks, it could get even better. In the latest weekly update on Bungie.net Frankie reports that Bungie isn't going to let Halo's 5th birthday happen without a bang.

Halo 3 exposure this week

Halo 3 developer Bungie has hinted that some "BIG surprises" about Master Chief's third outing will be coming our way in the next few days, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the launch of Halo: Combat Evolved - first released this week back in 2002.

The teasing hint appears in Bungie's latest weekly update during which the super-dev also promises to take a "lingering look at the series to date" for Halo's birthday week.

First Impressions of Halo 3

1up and EGM have had some time in the last month with the next iteration of Microsoft's Halo series. Several folks at the site have put up their impressions of the current build of the game, including some multiplayer feelings from EGM editor-in-chief Dan Hsu, a bunch of nice crunchy details from Mark Macdonald, a nostalgia-laiden look at the game from Luke Smith, and a potpourri of details from Crispin Boyer. From Luke's writeup: "Maybe it was the first shooter I played that had some substance? Maybe it was that my best friend bought me a copy of the game for my birthday and I didn't even have the console yet. Maybe it was all of the traveling to play in Halo tournaments on weekends in college, but somewhere between Halo: Combat Evolved's release and now, Halo became my Mario. It is the game that made me care about video games like I did when I was 10." .

A Pint of Milk, 6 Eggs and GTA San Andreas please

Any of you that read my articles regularly will know full well that I have a soft spot for independent gaming stores. I love them. In my former life (you can read that as "when I was still with my previous girlfriend") me and Mrs. Ben would on occasion go out shopping, as girls seem to like doing. I have mates who are coupled up that will happily spend hours trawling round clothes and shoe shops, burning their cash in the very contemporary pursuit of branded clothes and YSL baseball caps. I, however, would much prefer to spend the afternoon loitering in a decent indie gaming store. I love browsing the import and retro sections for oddities, chatting to the staff and gently guiding bewildered parents in the direction of an at least semi-commendable purchase for their kid's birthday (no, I'd personally stay clear of Need for Speed Underground.
