Area's Native American history highlighted

Marybeth Gerhardt of Sheboygan Falls and her boyfriend attended the Native American program Saturday at the Sheboygan County Historical Museum because she is an Ojibwa Chippewa Indian.

"I'm trying to teach him how to relate to the culture that I'm from and relate it to the American life of white people," said Gerhardt, 40.

"Native American: Sheboygan County's First Residents," was the theme for the museum's Third Saturday program, said Bob Harker, museum executive director.

Mark Denning, who grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation, and his children, Sawyer, 18, and Isabel, 12, wore Native American regalia and performed traditional and modern Indian dances for a group of about 60 people. The museum has numerous photos of Wisconsin Indian tribes and displays of arrowheads, Indian dress and a wigwam.

Harker Heights woman hospitalized after an accident in Bell County

A Harker Heights woman is in stable condition after a dump truck collided with her car near FM 439 and Sparta Road in Bell County.

Emergency crews used the jaws-of-life to rescue Jessica Dicini, 31, who was later air lifted to Scott and White Hospital.

Accident debris are scattered over the intersection from previous wrecks, and area residents said they want safety improvements to prevent any more.

It's hard to see who's coming down the hill, and how fast, when youre at the intersection of FM 439 and Sparta Road just outside Belton.

"I've lived here all my life, and Ive seen several wrecks here. In the past year, there's probably been ten wrecks on that corner," Bell County resident Denny Costine said.

Friday morning, a Pontiac Grand Prix tried to cross FM 439, when a dump truck headed westbound slammed into the passengers side.

Students soar onwards and upwards

STONEHENGE School saw off their Year 11 students in style last week as they released 150 balloons which represented the Year 11s being released out into the world.

The balloon release at the Amesbury school was just part of a whole day celebrating the Year 11 students' last full day of school before they went on study leave, which included parties and quizzes.

Deborah Harker from the school said: "We wanted to make it very memorable for them and we kept it a secret from them until they were handed their balloons.

"It's the first time we've done it and, hopefully, it won't be the last.

"The feedback from the students was they really enjoyed it."
