Hellgate: London PC Preview

Hellgate: London is a FPS/RPG blend in a post-apocalyptic setting, and as such features a number of elements related to the Diablo series. The game is played in both first and third person perspectives, and the gameplay is based heavily on the character's stats, as per role-playing games, as opposed to the player's personal skill in a first-person shooter. But what is it all about, the story, the races, and weapons, well read on for more detail.

Hellgate: London Opening Cinematic Trailer

Flagship Studios is releasing the cinematic trailer that serves as the introduction to Hellgate: London and focuses on events 18 years prior to the onset of the game. Specifically, it concerns itself with characters and events preceding the great battle of Allhallows Eve, in which a large Templar military force futilely assaulted London's Hellgate in an attempt to draw Demonkind's ever watchful eye away from survivors fleeing into the ancient city's protected underground.

The cinematic also introduces Jessica Sumerisle, heir to the great Lord Commander Sumerisle's Templar legacy. She will eventually decide where the final battle between London's remnant and the Legion of Dark will be fought.

Delays for Gran Turismo HD and Hellgate: London

Racing and shooting are two very different skills requiring similar types of concentration and coordination. They also have another thing in common these days as two highly-anticipated titles from the genres appear to be having delays in their release.

According to the listings on GameStop's online store, Gran Turismo HD, the racing simulation from Polyphony Digital, and Hellgate: London, the first-person MMO from Flagship Studios, are now expected to come out late next year. While there is no word from both studios directly on the intended release date, a spokesperson from Namco Bandai, Hellgate: London's publisher, said that the game is still on a "To Be Announced" status on their end.

Whether or not they have a release date, let's all just hope they won't get delayed further than they already seem to be.

Meet the Hellgate: London party

Here are five new screens from Hellgate: London. What makes this bunch different from the rest of the screens we've hosted so far is that it focuses mainly on the characters from the game. And no, they're not necessarily in action. Instead, it basically gives you a more holistic idea of the kind of characters you'd meet in-game.

Okay, so there's a couple of deadly-looking guys here, two babes (with one of them being a Lara Croft look-alike), and a kid with one stilt-leg. That's pretty diverse, eh? And why not? For a game as diverse as this, combining elements of both RPG and FPS, your character should, at the very least, really be up to par with the demands of the adventure.

Anyway, get to know them 'cause you're sure to have a long relationship with them in the future, once this game goes out.

Kicking up a notch: Hellgate: London's new faction

Sitting with Flagship CEO Bill Roper, GameSpot manages to squeeze out some answers from Hellgate: London's big guy, particularly regarding its hunter class.

The new hunter faction is primarily geared to attract the FPS player. Supposedly, what sets it apart from the templars and cabalists is that it allows for a total immersion in the world, as well as using high-tech weaponry and gadgets to wipe out demons. The templars are more n melee combat and holy rituals, while the cabalists utilize the powers of the demons against them by magical rites.

Without skipping a beat, but without revealing too much, Bill Roper describes the hunter design as "a cross between [Splinter Cell's] Sam Fisher, the marines from Aliens, and the anime Jin-Roh." Not reliant on spells, the hunters will, instead, prefer "Area 51-esque" technology to their advantage.
