New PS3 update improves image quality

PS3 firmware update 1.8 will be released today, improving the image quality of movies and PS2 and PSOne video games. It also allows people to check out stored video, music files and digital photos through the Internet with the handheld PlayStation Portable. A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers. Peter Dille, SVP, Marketing, SCEA says, "As adoption of HDTVs continues to pitch, we know that customers are hungry for content, and this latest firmware update influences the PS3s technology to deliver an HD-quality experience using the entertainment media already in your collection. In addition, we persist to improve the PS3s capabilities as an entertainment hub, giving consumers the option to bring their content with them on-the-go, or to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PC to the PS3 in their living room.

Media Create Japan Hardware Sales: May 7th-13th

Software sales had a poor showing last week, and hardware got hit too. Overall sales fell considerably after the incredible spike two weeks ago. Still, the Nintendo DS sold 164k handhelds, and the Wii waggled 52.5k consoles. The PSP didn't really seem shaken, as its sales remained fairly close to what they were two weeks ago with 34.5k sold, largely thanks to the re-release of Final Fantasy Tactics. It is the PlayStation 3 that is faring the worst, with sales below the 10k mark.

The PS3 pulled in a mere 9k systems, truly pathetic. We're holding out hope for the arrival of Folklore (formerly known as Monster Kingdom) when it debuts in early June. Ninja Gaiden Sigma will follow the week after, and we're hoping that both games manage to make an impact on the sales of the console like Gundam Musou did a few months back.

New Expensive PSP Cases... For Girls

The Japanese PS Pictogram design group is keeping the PSP fashion scene alive with the biggest collaboration effort yet. They're not just partnering with luggage manufacturer Porter, but instead having a four-way branding orgy, including dance group Genki Rockets. You may remember them from their appearance on Lumines II.

The X-girl — PS Pictogram — Genki Rockets — Porter PSP case and purse are now on sale for the low, low prices of 9,975 yen and 16,800 yen respectively. Together, that'll set PSP fans of the female persuasion back about $220 USD. Now, that's a bargain. Did I mention each comes with buttons?! Buttons!!! Michael McWhertor
