Patience, patience -- PlayStation 3 can wait

Sony PlayStation 3: Launch date: Today. Hard drive size: 20 gigabytes or 60 gigabytes. Disc drive: Blu-ray/DVD/CD (read only). Price: $499 or $599. (Launch games include: Resistance: Fall of Man, F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7, NBA 2K7, Madden NFL 07.)
It's amazing how shabby your living room suddenly looks after you take the latest PlayStation console out of the box. The PlayStation 3 is all sleek lines and chrome accents, like a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Porsche 911 had a wild weekend of sex -- ending up with an 11-pound, 20-gigabyte love child.

Life would be so much better if we could all just live in our PS3. And if you're dead set on getting one this holiday season, that might be the only housing option you have left.

Dean, Nooch and PlayStation 3 debug units

Are you reading elsewhere that Sony got a bunch of "debug'' PS3 units (not the final consumer version but capable of playing nearly finished games) into the hands of reviewers?

Yes, Dean and I have ours. I picked them up personally Friday; I began playing "Resistance: Fall of Man'' last night, plus a little "Ridge Racer."

Stay tuned, we'll have lots to say.

Interesting, though, how torn I am: As exciting as the PS3 is, the late-year avalanche of games has produced a stack of titles for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360 that I'd also like to devote time to. At the top of my list: "Killzone Liberation'' and "Death Jr. II: Root of Evil'' for the PSP; "FEAR" and "Marvel Ultimate Alliance'' for the 360, and "Bully,'' "Family Guy'' and "Snoopy vs.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance: PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii

While Marvel Ultimate Alliance might not be the best title to show off the graphical capabilities of all three systems, it's still interesting to see how the three current-gen consoles stack up when running the same game. The PlayStation 3 version is noticeably choppier than the other two, maybe a product of the game running at 1080p. If you want a clearer look at the side-by-side-by-side, check out the HD version of the video for maximum nitpickery and flamewar ammunition. Michael McWhertor

'Marvel: Ultimate Alliance' is superheroic

And that's the coolest thing about "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance," a new action RPG from Raven Software (the developer responsible for "X-Men Legends"). As any fanboy (or girl) will tell you, the sheer volume of playable heroes offered in this action packed title is a divine thing sent from comic book heaven.

More than 140 of Marvel's famed characters make an appearance during "Ultimate Alliance," which finds Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil - a super villain super force with a deadly chip on its collective shoulder - doing their malevolent best to muck things up for the known universe.

Of those 140 characters, more than 20 of them are playable, allowing gamers to create their very own superhero dream team. Though you start the game with a team of four made up of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America and Thor, you soon have the option to pick from the likes of Deadpool, Elektra, Colossus, Iron Man and many more.

Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion delayed until early 2007, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance available on other platforms, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom takes the mantle as the sole exclusive RPG on the new platform. Aside from being the only option for role-playing fans on PlayStation 3, there is little reason to play Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. That is, unless you enjoy unpolished, unoriginal games.

Dark Kingdom follows the story of three warriors in their effort to restore peace in the Kingdom of Dureth. As members of the elite group the Dragon's Shade, the trio is sent on a simple quest by the king to stop a barbarian invasion to the north. Upon succeeding in their quest, the warriors return home to discover the king possessed by dark magic. The king's lust for power has led Dureth into ruins and its people into suffering.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (PSP) Review

Ultimate continuity respectively). Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (MUA) for the PSP is another entry in the Legends series. Developed by Raven Software and ported by Vicarious Visions, MUA is much more ambitious game than previous installments. Graphics Those individuals that played X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse will know what to expect from this game. Its the same exact game engine seen in previous installments.

Defcon: Everybody Dies review

Introversion is a software house fast gaining recognition not just amongst gamers but also within the industry. This is its third foray into a world of original and fun gaming with its previous games being Uplink and Darwinia, both of which rightly managed to gather up favourable reviews across the globe.

This time around it is bringing us the subject of global thermonuclear war in the cheap and neatly packaged form of DEFCON. Those of you familiar with the 80s movie Wargames will find the presentation in the game very familiar. .
