Metal Gear Solid 4 delayed until 2008?

Arguably the game that the PlayStation was made for and certainly the most eagerly-awaited game for the PS3, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has apparently had it's release date pushed back to next year. Reports allegedly from major US games retailer EB Games have now indicated a March 2008 release.

That claim comes from a posting on insider gaming news source Gameswank (no, really) suggesting that supporters of Solid Snake who signed on for updates on the progress of Konami's top title recently received an email notifying them that the release date had slipped from September 2007 to March 2008.

The email, which originally appeared on the PS3 Forums bulletin board, went:

Dear Customer,

You have signed up to receive release date changes for:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Old Release Date - 9/1/2007 New Release Date - 3/1/2008

NOTE: The product release date is the best estimate as to when the product will become available.

Monster Employment Index UK Declines in April, as White-collar ...

Online recruitment activity and related employment opportunities across the United Kingdom declined by nine points in April, reflecting a similar slowdown in hiring from the first quarter of 2006. Despite the drop, the Index still stands at a higher level than the first two months of this year, reaching 141 points in April. Year-on-year growth stands at 26 points or 23 percent. The Index is based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from Web sites across Europe, including Monster.

Most UK industry sectors saw a decline in hiring throughout April, while several occupations did experience increases in demand, including healthcare, social work and personal care and environment, architecture and urbanism.

The Indexs decline was driven partly by lower demand for white-collar employees in April.

Iraq and Afghanistan Supplemental Spending, 2008

Congress is now considering President Bush's request for an additional $145 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through September 30, 2008. The House Armed Services Committee is including these funds in the Defense Authorization Bill for Fiscal Year 2008, which runs from October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008. Of this, $142 billion will be for the military and $3 billion will be for the State Department.

President Bush submitted this request on February 5, the same date on which he requested $93 billion for the wars for this year's budget and $482 billion for the regular baseline military budget for FY 2008 (a 62% increase over the baseline military budget in 2001).

While political gamesmanship will continue over war funding for this fiscal year (which ends on September 30), the substantive debate on this year's supplemental bill is all but over.

Up from the rubble

DANVERS -- Six months after a fiery explosion ripped apart Danversport, a new neighborhood is rising. Homes have been knocked flat. Modular houses have been dropped into place from cranes. Buzzing saws and banging hammers echo across two narrow side streets, joined like a horseshoe.

"There's new music in the neighborhood," said Barbara Lynch, 55, standing on her porch on Riverside Street. "The hammering, the sawing, the diggers, the dumpers. That's what my grandson calls them, diggers and dumpers. I hear them beep when they back up, and I think, 'Oh, is something happening?' "

Eleven new homes are going up. Two more modular homes are due May 30. Sixteen homes have been demolished on Bates and Riverside streets, the area that sustained the most damage. A gas station is being rebuilt on Water Street.

Online Gambling: Richest Man In the World Sounds Off On Gambling

"To quite an extent, gambling is a tax on ignorance. I find it socially revolting when the government preys on the ignorance of its citizenry. When the government makes it easy for people to take their Social Security checks and pull [slot machine] handles, it relieves taxes on those who don't fall for it. It's not government at its best."

-- Warren Buffett

After spending last week in Mississippi for the Southern Gaming Summit, I've finally gotten a chance to catch up on the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) Annual Shareholder meeting. I came across the above quote from the May 5 Q&A session. The quote is part of Berkshire CEO Warren Buffett's response to a question regarding Buffett's thoughts on the future of the gambling industry. Buffett's partner Charlie Munger then followed up by labeling gambling a "dirty business."

Now I don't necessarily disagree, and I certainly respect the opinions of both Buffett and Munger as two of the great philosophers of our time.
