PSP UK Sales Rise 60%

For a while there, the PSP appeared to be in dire straits. But recently, all we've been hearing about is how much more popular Sony's portable has become. This here is more evidence of that, as Sony is reporting that since dropping the price of the little system by 20 in the UK (that was May 4), they've seen a 60% increase in sales. Amazing what a little price drop can do for you, isn't it?

The basic pack currently sits at 130, and Play.com and Amazon are listing it for 10 less, so it's no real surprise to see an increase in sales.

"The price realignment was about passing on manufacturing cost savings to customers. This new price point opens up a new wave of consumers to the PSP experience," said Sony's sales director Andrew Howsen, speaking to MCV.

Some of the bigger games have already released for the PSP (Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Burnout Dominator, and Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters come to mind), and even more are on the way for 2007, so hopefully, sales will continue to increase.

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Dated

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops for the PSP has been confirmed for a May 25 release, after the initial run of UMDs was recalled.

The original disks for the PSP did not have the required BBFC rating printed upon their surface, but with age-certificates firmly in place, the nation can now sit with baited breath for what is by all accounts a successful handheld Metal Gear experience.

Konami launches Portable Ops league

Following a similar service it ran for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Konami is to launch a dedicated online league for its PSP stealth instalment MGS: Portable Ops.Created by Games-Services, the official League will live at MPOLEAGUE.com. Players will be able to take part in official tournaments or even create their own - though we don't have enough friends with PSPs for the last one. You'll also be able to form your own clans, recruit players, and discuss tactics and tips on the community forums on the site. Three official competitions are currently planned in June and October. Konami says it's looking to emulate the response to the official Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence competitions, which apparently caused a bit of a storm in stealth land. .
