Infogrames Full-Year Revenue Falls 17%

French publisher Infogrames, owner of Atari in the U.S., today reported that total sales dropped to 304.5 million ($411.8 million) in the year through March 31, compared with 365.6 million in the previous year. Q4 sales were up 12 percent, however, increasing to 82.6 million ($111.7 million).

"Sales suffered mainly from the significant decline in business in the United States during the second half of the year," the company said. "A restructuring plan of Atari, Inc is currently in progress."

Titles expected for release during the current quarter include DBZ Shin Budokai 2 on PSP (Europe/U.S.), Hot Pixel on PSP (Europe), Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles Naruzu on PS2 (Europe), DBZ Harukanaru Densetsu on DS (U.S.), Trioncube on DS (Europe), Armed Assault on PC (U.S.), Centipede Millipede on Xbox Live Arcade (Europe/U.S.), and Missile Command on Xbox Live Arcade (Europe/U.S.).

Breakfast With Capcom & D3 Publishing

Had breakfast with some folks at Capcom and D3 Publisher, this morning at Manhattan's Hudson Hotel. I ate a sesame seed bagel and tried not to spill my orange juice on anything valuable, while they talked video games. Pretty good deal, if you ask me. Here are a few of the highlights coming out from the two companies, over the next couple of months.

Capcom

Devil May Cry 4 (PS3, Xbox 360, TBD)--The series' primary protagonist, the not-so-subtly-named Dante, takes a back seat to Nero, a platinum blond demon hunter in a trench coat, sporting a demonically-possessed arm, ala Evil Dead, without all of the self-mutilation. As always, extra points are awarded, the more stylish your demon killing is. Not surprisingly, DMC4 is a great looking game, especially when played through a bigscreen HD set.

The woe of the little black box

In the universe of video games, it's amazing how quickly an empire can crumble. Less than a decade ago, Sony wowed gamers everywhere with news of their follow-up to the PlayStation console, then considered the height of cool for console gaming. The PlayStation 2 took Sony even higher in the console war, dominating longtime champion Nintendo and holding steady over Microsoft's Xbox.

The PS2 is still dominating eight years later with the best sales record of any console ever, totaling 115 million units sold through the end of 2006.

But their success has made them cocky as the top name in console gaming, leading them to make some costly mistakes with the new PlayStation 3. The biggest problem has been its price tag, which has been set at $600 since the PS3 was launched last November.
