Dr. Mathews on "disturbing" effects of videogames

Since we're feeling quite generous today, we're giving you a new name to despise: Dr. Vincent Mathews. This guy, you see, recently authored a study about videogames and their "disturbing" effects on the brain. The conclusion of his study can actually be summed up into one provoking sentence:

Teens who play violent video games show increased activity in areas of the brain linked to emotional arousal and decreased responses in regions that govern self-control.
The sample population used for the study included children 13 to 17 years old. One half of them played FPS Medal of Honor: Frontline, while the other half tried racing title Need for Speed: Underground. Afterwards, the children were asked to complete a task requiring concentration and processing of emotional stimuli.

A Pint of Milk, 6 Eggs and GTA San Andreas please

Any of you that read my articles regularly will know full well that I have a soft spot for independent gaming stores. I love them. In my former life (you can read that as "when I was still with my previous girlfriend") me and Mrs. Ben would on occasion go out shopping, as girls seem to like doing. I have mates who are coupled up that will happily spend hours trawling round clothes and shoe shops, burning their cash in the very contemporary pursuit of branded clothes and YSL baseball caps. I, however, would much prefer to spend the afternoon loitering in a decent indie gaming store. I love browsing the import and retro sections for oddities, chatting to the staff and gently guiding bewildered parents in the direction of an at least semi-commendable purchase for their kid's birthday (no, I'd personally stay clear of Need for Speed Underground.

Need for Speed: Carbon (Xbox 360) Review

Since the 2003 release of Need for Speed Underground, EA's seminal auto-racing series has been forever entwined with the tuner culture that inspired that particular entry. Thus far, all three titles following Underground (two with handheld spin-offs) have adhered to this theme, adding onto it with sandbox-grade gamescapes and new sort of races to gun your tricked-out economy clunker through. We now focus our attention to the latest iteration of the NFS franchise, Need for Speed Carbon. And while I am going to pick this game apart to see what's under the hood, I'm not going to try to figure out what the name means. Graphics The graphics will likely be the first thing most will notice about this game, as this title is damn pretty. All the car models in this game look authentic to their real-life counterparts and utterly beautiful in their own right, especially on the 360.

PSP Need for Speed slips

Despite both Tiger Woods and Need for Speed Underground originally being lined-up as PSP launch titles, word now reaches us that the racer has in fact joined the golf sim as a 2005 release. Both were originally scheduled for December - to coincide with the PSP's Japanese launch (which is supposed to be on the 12th). February 17th will now see the arrival of Need for Speed Underground Rivals.

The likes of Ridge Racer, Vampire Chronicles, Mahjong Fight Club, Armoured Core and many more, should still be out in time to capitalise on the PSP's launch, with other potential hits like Metal Gear Acid and Puyo Pop Fever joining the fray before the year is out (in Japan).

Given our current presence in Japan, we look forward to checking out the PSP post-haste come the 12th.

DAoC downtime scheduled for November 30

According to the Camelot Herald, the three-pronged war in Mythic Entertainment's Dark Age of Camelot MMORPG will be put to a temporary ceasefire this Thursday at 8:00 A.M. EST.

The live servers will be experiencing some downtime on that day in order to make way for a few game fixes. No details yet on the fixes, but hey, if it's gonna make the game better then it's all good, right?

All the exhilarating battles and drama will resume around 3:30 P.M. on the same day, so you guys don't have to worry too much about going without your DAoC fix for too long. Additionally, a Pendragon patch will also be dropping today at 2:00 P.M. EST. We'll be sure to inform you guys as soon as more details emerge.

Smashing The Clock

One afternoon last year, Chap Achen, who oversees online orders at Best Buy Co. (BBY ), shut down his computer, stood up from his desk, and announced that he was leaving for the day. It was around 2 p.m., and most of Achen's staff were slumped over their keyboards, deep in a post-lunch, LCD-lit trance. "See you tomorrow," said Achen. "I'm going to a matinee." .
