'Neverwinter Nights 2' Reviews are Good

I am a big fan of the single player RPG genre. Baldur's Gate was one of my all time favorite games ('Go for the eyes, Boo!'). Even though I never played the original Neverwinter Nights, I have been watching the progress on the sequel, Neverwinter Nights 2, for some time.

The Neverwinter Nights games are designed to be adaptations of the Dungeons & Dragons rulesets. In addition, the games include toolsets to allow game modders to generate additional content that can be shared with other players. This concept has been hugely successful, as the original game is still actively played by many people.

Neverwinter Nights 2 has been recently released and the reviews are now streaming in. Gamespot gives it an 8.6/10, saying "lives up to its pedigree by delivering a captivating story full of exciting twists and characters who you'll grow attached to out of fondness or, perhaps even better, complete loathing." GameDaily gives it a perfect 100/100 and says "Neverwinter Nights 2 is truly one of the most epic adventures found on a PC, and it should be purchased without hesitation."

But, the most helpful review that I found is from Eurogamer, who rates the game an 8 out of 10.

1UP Yanks Neverwinter Nights 2 Review

So the other day, 1UP post a review of a game. No biggie, that's their job. Happens all the time. But their Neverwinter Nights 2 review? Went up, they gave it an awful score (5/10), then it went down and was never seen again. Cue howls of derision from Neverwinter Nights fans and armchair conspiracy theorists alike.

Despite 1UP taking some flak over it, it was in their best interests to take the review, drag it out the back, line it up against the wall then go bury the body in the desert where nobody will ever, ever find it again. Why? It made them look like hacks, which for the most part they most certainly are not. I mean, the thing was barely legible: But issues exist, and defining them is really no more complex than saying, "Hello D&D superchrome, buh-bye storytelling and character development (you know, those things you're supposed to "immerse" yourself in)." The idea seems to be that we're meant to rah-rah about a superabundance of feats, spells, races, prestige (advanced) classes, and math-equation tickers full of the usual "I attack you with a +4 sword of --" booooooring.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Update

Those of you who were having technical problems with Obsidian's RPG, Neverwinter Nights 2, might want to get hold of the latest patch which updates the game to version 1.02.809.

The update is applied automatically from within the game. However, mirrors of a manual patch are available as well. One of the folks over at Obsidian Entertainment stressed that this version is a hotfix and it address the issue with companions "wreaking some havoc on cutscenes and scripted events." Moreover, an issue with the Server Monitor Console was fixed, so I guess they're gradually making up for the slip ups some of you have been complaining about.

Any budding Salman Rushdie's out there could do a lot worse than take a small web trip to Bioware's official site today, where the specialist RPG developer is launching a contest in search of a talented writer, who will be rewarded for their abilities with a new job at the firm's Edmonton studio in Canada. The very special prize would no doubt be dream come true for many an RPG games fan, Bioware ranking among the very top developers in the genre, having previously crafted Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate and more besides. The lucky individual succeeding must be available to start at the firm immediately, according to the official website, which also adds that the writer will be assisting in the development of several upcoming RPG titles.

Atari reveal Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide

Infogrames' Atari label, today confirmed a forthcoming add-on to the hugely popular D&D RPG Neverwinter Nights, Shadows of Undrentide. This is the first official expansion pack and is scheduled for release come Spring 2003.

Among a number of additions, the add-on will bring a huge new 40-hour single player game, new skills, classes, monsters, spells, etc. In addition, the pack will include two new tile sets for use in the Aurora toolset that will enable budding module designers to create completely new worlds.

The game is being developed in a collaboration between BioWare and Floodgate Entertainment, the developer founded by many former Looking Glass employees.

"It's a great collaborative arrangement we've got with Floodgate," commented Dr. Greg Zeschuk, joint CEO and Co-Executive Producer of Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide.
