First look: 1.80 firmware update for PlayStation 3 truly impresses

When the PlayStation 3 launched, the reviews could best be described as tepid, as the functionality and many promised features just weren't there. But we live in an age of online updates and changing firmware; with this week's 1.80 firmware update, the PlayStation 3 has become a very impressive piece of A/V goodness. The features are finally starting to catch up with the promise of the hardware, which is to say that the PS3 is now coming into its own.

720p Blu-ray and DVD upscaling

The biggest fix is that Blu-ray discs can now run in 720p. This is an overdue improvement and clears up one of the things that has held the system back from being the best Blu-ray player value out there. Now anyone with an HDTV need not worry about resolution compatibility issues.

For home theater enthusiasts, the new upscaling options make this update a truly beautiful thing.

Nintendo Forecasts 35M Wii Units in US by 2012

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012. More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months. The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years. The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April. In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated. A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Your picks on the best ever PlayStation games: Do you agree?

The other day, as I plugged in my PS3, I got nostalgic about PSOne games. I threw out my list and you've thrown back me some thoughts. So now nail for me your favourite PS2 games. God of War II that I was playing this week and raving about will make my top 10.

Here are some of your comments so far:

Chris began his email by quoting me: "Your picks; Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Tekken, Tomb Raiser and Wipeout...Spot on fella!"

Thanks Chris. You must be my alter-ego! We must go multiplayer sometime.

Seriously there certainly were other views. Fantom3X Online Gamer also kindly said my list was "spot on" but added some more: Silent Hill, Suikoden hadn't heard of that Japanese RPG!, Vandal Hearts, Final Fantasy 8, Spyro and Tekken.

Pirates of the Caribbean Ships to PS3, Wii, 360 and More

Though they often represent the very worst that video gaming has to offer, licensed games represent a large chunk of the market, especially when they launch alongside some of the biggest movies coming out each year. Among the treats for this summer, gamers have already had a chance to get their hands on video game versions of Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third. Just in time for the movie’s release at the end of this week, Disney has announced that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End has joined them and shipped to retail. It should now be available for the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS and PC. More information about the game can be found in the press release below:

BURBANK, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- May. 22, 2007 From islands and pirate ships in the Caribbean to the streets of historical Singapore, adventures lie ahead in the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End video game.
