Games, movies score mutual benefits

From the box office to the Xbox, the relationship between movies and video games has never been stronger than right now.

As curtains rise on 2007's big-ticket summer flicks, the video-game versions of those films are letting fans live out the fantasies and adventure at home. Don't just watch Spidey tangle with Sandman, become the web-slinging wonder yourself and see what it takes to be a superhero. The result of this one-two punch is jacked-up hype and revenue for both the movie and the game as they mutually market one another.

This year's crop includes Spider- Man 3, Shrek the Third, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Ratatouille, a Pixar animated feature film about a rat that wants to be a fine chef in a top French restaurant in Paris, and Surf's Up, an animated mockumentary taking viewers behind-the-scenes at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Video Games Released

From islands and pirate ships in the Caribbean to the streets of historic Singapore, adventures lie ahead in the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End video games. Inspired by the events, locations and characters from both the second and third "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End video games are now available at retail stores worldwide for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, the Wii home video game system from Nintendo, the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, the PlayStation Portable system, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.

Players will take on the roles of Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, as well as other familiar characters as they face swashbuckling skirmishes and acrobatic maneuvers in games that feature action and humor while extending beyond the story, environments and characters of both films.

We predict, they slog away: Star Wars light sabre game coming to ...

The release of the Disney film "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" was accompanied by a Wii game of the same name that lets players use controllers to pretend to be sword-fighting buccaneers.

Yup, that's pretty much what we'd expect now that publishers are getting the idea that the Wiimote can be used like a, well, sword-y sort of thing. You know, you wave it around. Hang on, that sounds like something I mused about back in January:

But the Wii instantly makes the PS3 and Xbox 360 look like the mainframes of the past, stuck in an old paradigm. And today’s kids, of course, are tomorrow’s console buyers too...And if there isn’t someone out there writing a Star Wars game for the Wii, complete with light sabre duels, I’d just like to say: start now and you’ll make a killing next Christmas.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Review (Xbox 360)

Well, here we are in the final week of May, and we all know whats inevitably coming our way over the next two months: blockbuster summer movies. Yes, this is the time of the year that can make or break a studio, as good reviews and great word of mouth can mean hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. This actually coincides with the worst time of the year to be a game reviewer. Generally, the only games that are released in the summer are publishers castoffs and licensed movie games, which everyone knows have a history of putrescence. This blockbuster season got off to a rocky start with the Xbox 360 version of Shrek the Third, and were now seeing the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. At Worlds End is actually a video game adaptation of the second (PotC: Dead Mans Chest) and third (PotC: At Worlds End) films in Gore Verbinskis trilogy.
