16:57 80GB Playstation 3 only in Korea (0)

It was rumored a while ago that another Playstation 3 version was in production next to the 60GB and extremely rare 20GB version. It has now been confirmed by Sony that this version with an 80GB hard drive will only become available in Korean territory.

Sony's motivation is that because people in Korea had to wait for so long, they're being rewarded an extra 20GB of space. The rest of the machine's specifications will remain the same as the European console, which means that it'll be shipped without the Playstation 2 Emotion Engine processor to cut back on production costs. Sony explicitly mentioned that there were no plans to release an 80GB model in Europe at all. The official specifications for the Korean version of the console can be found on this website.

If you've already managed to fill up your 20 or 60GB of space you shouldn't worry at all.

The woe of the little black box

In the universe of video games, it's amazing how quickly an empire can crumble. Less than a decade ago, Sony wowed gamers everywhere with news of their follow-up to the PlayStation console, then considered the height of cool for console gaming. The PlayStation 2 took Sony even higher in the console war, dominating longtime champion Nintendo and holding steady over Microsoft's Xbox.

The PS2 is still dominating eight years later with the best sales record of any console ever, totaling 115 million units sold through the end of 2006.

But their success has made them cocky as the top name in console gaming, leading them to make some costly mistakes with the new PlayStation 3. The biggest problem has been its price tag, which has been set at $600 since the PS3 was launched last November.

North America: SONY releases new PS3 software

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- New PlayStation 3 software to be released Thursday in North America features video upscaling capabilities and more PSP Remote Play functionality, according to an announcement Wednesday by Sony Computer Entertainment America.

The software update will improve the picture quality of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games played on the PlayStation 3, and show movies up to 1080p resolution. Classic games will look even better, according to Sony, and Blu-ray Disc videos will be maximized on big-screen TVs that connect to the PS3 using HDMI.

The new update also expands the capabilities of Remote Play, a function introduced with the console that provides the ability for PlayStation Portable (PSP) users to view content stored on their PS3 remotely on their PSPs, such as photos, videos and music.
