Can Sony click with download store?

Scores of companies are betting there's gold in helping go-go commuters and road warriors catch the latest episodes of 24 and Grey's Anatomy. Apple downloads movies to iPods. Cell phone carriers stream TV shows to handsets. Sling Media's Slingbox connects users to their home TVs from any Web-enabled handheld.

But a company uniquely positioned just a few years ago to be among the front-runners in the nascent mobile-video category is conspicuously missing, said James McQuivey, a Forrester Research analyst. Sounding a little like Marlon Brando, McQuivey argues that Sony, with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), should have been a contender. He notes that Apple's iTunes has sold 50 million TV shows, seized a huge market lead and proven people will watch video on small screens.

"The thing is, Sony could have been all this," McQuivey said.

Nab a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) For $139; Select UMDs for $4.99

Sony recently dropped the price on its PlayStation Portable handheld to $169, edging it closer to the DS in price. A deal spotted at a Sam Goody store tightens the gab of the $129 Nintendo DS Lite to the Sony PSP by $10. Sam Goody is offering the Sony PSP Core for $139.99 by offering a $30 mail-in-rebate. The deal is available until this Wednesday, but it may be extended an additional week.

This deal is not available online, but at local stores only. Check the Sam Goody store locator (here) to find one in your area. Several UMD movies are available for $4.99 as well, in limited quantity and selection of course. I definitely recommend checking the PSP out at that price. There are some great looking titles on the horizon, including God of War: Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War and Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles to name only a few!

God of War: Chains of Olympus for PSP - Fact Sheet

In 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment America's Santa Monica Studios introduced God of War, which many publications considered the best videogame of 2005 with over a dozen "Game of the Year Awards." Then in Spring 2007, the original development team introduced God of War II, the second chapter of this sprawling odyssey that went on to receive critical acclaim and with a 94% rating on GameRankings. Now, from the creative team that brought you the Daxter on the PlayStation Portable handheld entertainment system, Santa Ana-based Ready At Dawn Studios and Sony Computer Entertainment America's Santa Monica Studios bring you God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PSP system. Developed from the outset as an original story, God of War: Chains of Olympus delivers highly detailed graphics, incredible animation detail and yet another adventure in the dark and brutal world of Greek mythology that fans of the God of War franchise have come to know and love.

VoIP to hit the PSP VoIP to hit the PSP VoIP to hit the PSP

Sony and BT have teamed up to extend the functions of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to include voice and video calling through VoIP.Using Wi-Fi connectivity users will be able to make calls through the handheld console by attaching a microphone."The PSP is an excellent device for both gaming and communications, because of its high quality screen and audio capabilities," said BT's chief of mobility and convergence Steve Andrews.Users will be able to connect via any ISP, but BT OpenZone will be the first public Wi-Fi provider to offer the service, although it is likely to spread wider in the future to offer the greatest number of connections. This forms part of a four-year deal between the companies, which according to BT will see additional features added to the PSP in the next few months, including the full range of VoIP connectivity such as calls to mobiles and PCs.
