The PSP Is on the Rebound

In a story from Home Media Magazine, ever since the PlayStation Portable (PSP) dropped its price "from $200 to $170, hardware sales on the PlayStation Portable, which plays UMDs (Universal Media Discs), are up 40%.""The story on UMD is that we didn't do a very good job at launch with articulating what consumer we were going after," stated Peter Dille, SVP of Marketing for Sony. "The studio said 'here's a new format.' And that triggers a bunch of things in the Hollywood pipeline that really didn't make sense for PSP. Shame on us, because we didn't explain we were aiming at 18- to 34-year-old males. We're looking more for Jackass-type movie content. There was a proliferation of UMD movies that didn't make much sense, and they backed up at retail." With Target coming back into the fold as a supporter, Dille feels that all the PSP's ills are in the past.

Can Sony click with download store?

Scores of companies are betting there's gold in helping go-go commuters and road warriors catch the latest episodes of 24 and Grey's Anatomy. Apple downloads movies to iPods. Cell phone carriers stream TV shows to handsets. Sling Media's Slingbox connects users to their home TVs from any Web-enabled handheld.

But a company uniquely positioned just a few years ago to be among the front-runners in the nascent mobile-video category is conspicuously missing, said James McQuivey, a Forrester Research analyst. Sounding a little like Marlon Brando, McQuivey argues that Sony, with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), should have been a contender. He notes that Apple's iTunes has sold 50 million TV shows, seized a huge market lead and proven people will watch video on small screens.

"The thing is, Sony could have been all this," McQuivey said.

New PS3 update improves image quality

PS3 firmware update 1.8 will be released today, improving the image quality of movies and PS2 and PSOne video games. It also allows people to check out stored video, music files and digital photos through the Internet with the handheld PlayStation Portable. A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers. Peter Dille, SVP, Marketing, SCEA says, "As adoption of HDTVs continues to pitch, we know that customers are hungry for content, and this latest firmware update influences the PS3s technology to deliver an HD-quality experience using the entertainment media already in your collection. In addition, we persist to improve the PS3s capabilities as an entertainment hub, giving consumers the option to bring their content with them on-the-go, or to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PC to the PS3 in their living room.
