Aspyr: Progress On Prey & Empire at War

Aspyr Media's November newsletter focuses on the recently announced Mac version of Prey, progress on Star Wars: Empire At War, and the new gameplay video and trailer section on Aspyr's site.

More about Prey:We're excited to be able to unveil our latest Mac game, Prey. Based on an enhanced Doom 3 engine, Prey adds portals and the ability walk on walls and flip gravity to completely change what you expect in a first person shooter. The game is up and running well on the Mac, and is in the final stages of testing. Aspyr's previous experience with the Doom 3 engine on the Mac has made the transition of Prey to OS X very smooth, and if all continues to go well it will be hitting store shelves in early 2007.Empire at War's progress:Work on Empire at War for Mac is moving along nicely.

Bravo, Massimiliano: Italian wins GS

In Saturday's Birds of Prey World Cup race, Italian GS specialist Massimiliano Blardone edged Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal by .04 seconds, and then wore the green, white and red flag to the top of the podium.

American Ted Ligety finished third, .07 seconds behind Blardone's time of 2 minutes, 27.88 seconds, for his first podium of the season.

Blardone, who picked up his third career win, was one of four Italians in the top 15.

"This year we have sort of a dream team, made out of four racers," Blardone said through an interpreter after the race. "Me, (Davide) Simoncelli, (Peter) Fill and (Giorgio) Rocca. We've worked together all summer and that for sure has brought up our level of training, and we can do better than we're doing at the moment."

Simoncelli took sixth, while Rocca was 13th in his first race back since hurting his knee earlier this season.

Miller wins Birds of Prey downhill

Bode Miller had company all around him Friday, and not just on the podium. Miller narrowly avoided a high-speed collision with a course worker to capture his first World Cup downhill victory in two years, ignoring the scare along with increasingly heavy snowfall to charge down the Birds of Prey course in 1 minute, 46.15 seconds. .

Prey first person shooter coming to Mac

Aspyr Media announced Wednesday plans to release a Macintosh conversion of the first person shooter Prey in January, 2007. The game is currently in development for the Mac internally at Aspyr Studios.

Originally developed by Human Head Studios and published for the PC by 2K Games, Prey follows the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic whose life changes when he's abducted by aliens, along with his people — awakening long-dormant spiritual powers as he tries to save his girlfriend, and ultimately, the entire Earth.

Features of Prey include "gravity flipping," the ability to traverse walls, "death walking," which allows Tommy to regain health and spirit energy before returning to his body, "spirit mode," portals that materialize enemies out of thin air, and multiplayer support.

Racers get a fast look at Birds of Prey

BEAVER CREEK - While recreational skiers enjoyed the more than two feet of powder at Beaver Creek Wednesday, World Cup skiers tackled a well-maintained Birds of Prey downhill course in freezing temperatures.

"They've done an amazing job," said Patrik Jaerbyn of the crew that worked through the night to ensure there would be the necessary one day of downhill training before Friday's race.

Four snow cats, six winch cats and a fuel cat cleared the course of snow from 6 p.m. Tuesday until about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"It was tough," said Chief of Course Greg Johnson, whose crew pulled off a nearly identical feat last year. "The weather is getting old. I'm looking forward to a sunny race."

Tuesday's downhill training was canceled, and Wednesday's was delayed until 1 p.m.

One day, the Birds of Prey

BEAVER CREEK - Skier Thomas Walsh wants to become a triathlon champion and president. But first, the 11-year-old hopes to best the World Cup and Olympics.

How does he plan to achieve these goals?

Hard work, he says.

"It's no easy game," Walsh said. "It's no daily TV show sitting on the couch. You just have to work as hard as you can."

The Avon resident and sixth grade Vail Mountain student trains in the off season for triathlons, one of which he won last year, and skis in the winter. In the end, he said, confidence is key.

"You have to be on top of the game," he said. "You have a mental and physical challenge as well. You have to always know you can do it."

'Starts in the valley'
As racers descend upon the Birds of Prey course at Beaver Creek, several local youngsters aspire to one day race the World Cup circuit - a daunting task by some accounts.
